Paul Ortiz, professor of labor history at #CornellILR, discusses the importance of family, mutual aid and collective action within Latino communities in the context of National Hispanic Heritage Month. Read more: apnews.com/article/hisp...
Paul Ortiz, professor of labor history at the Cornell University ILR School, says: “The centrality of family, mutual aid and community is very important to us [Latinx people] because our parents, our grandparents, we’ve had to struggle to really make it in this country. Coming from collectivist cultures is partly why Latinos join labor unions at a higher rate. We understand the importance of collaboration, collective struggle in terms of improving wages and working conditions.”

Blau says that although her first choice would be to have a federal mandate of six weeks of paid leave, she believes the More Paid Leave for More Americans Act has promise. However, Blau said a $1,000 bonus is not enough to cover the costs of taking care of a child.

Dolly Parton (1946–2026) helped bring the concerns of working women into the American mainstream through "9 to 5." Rest in peace, Dolly. ❤️
Ileen DeVault, Professor of Labor History at the ILR School, explains: “In the 1970s, Dolly Parton joined Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin to make a movie based on the lives and experiences of women office workers in the 9to5 movement (now SEIU Local 925). Though the movie is hilarious, it was also based on the real stories of the women they met. Parton’s role in ‘9 to 5’ and the success of the iconic theme song of the same name, which she wrote and performed, helped turn a grassroots campaign against workplace sexism into a national conversation.”
