I used to wonder "why do they expect us to care about their quarterly reports" but there is a reason - reporting big numbers makes you a Serious Campaign and makes it easier to raise more money later

Reminder: NCSBE is forging ahead with their maximally-hostile rule changes, some reports had indicated they needed leg. review first but they did not. Looks like this is trickling down even to sane counties.

That might be a good alignment strategy. It's hard to write code to determine "was that wrong? Should I not have done that?". But AIs are reasonably good at detecting that. So put one to work watching the other and telling it "no" when it does something bad.

Seems like it would make everyone into an APT?

I think utilities are pretty hardened but merely having the Internet unusable would be like getting bombed. E.g. imagine every business has to stop using every kind of SaaS, all at once. Communicate between offices entirely on phone calls, if those work.

It's important to have bipartisan monitoring and signoff, to promote legitimacy. If only any normies knew any of this stuff.

Anecdote: plenty of R voters in my precinct (though mostly D), usually the board has to find a Republican judge from out of precinct (I have had a couple from within). So far they have yet to assign one to my precinct. They will probably find one by election day though, I've never been without one

I went to a few local Less Wrong meetups ~2010 and explained it to my wife then, she said "sounds like a cult" and I replied "oh, it totally is". I've been keeping her updated on the recent drama (hadn't kept up), honestly if it displaces political shitshows from our conversations, it's a win

Don't know about Musk, I remember thinking they were looking for The Cathedral and must have thought USAID funded it, like that's where protesters got paid from or some such.

I remember thinking we were gonna default, either accidentally when the boys rewrote Treasury's payment system, or intentionally because it might sound like a good idea to Musk or Trump.

Outside the no-campaigning zone, anyone can observe, but no harassing or intimidating the voters.
000
coreymutter.bsky.social @coreymutter.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Also, if you want to be a passive observer (inside or in the no-campaigning zone), look into the requirements. In NC you have to be trained and represent a party. AFAIK there is no place you can just walk into polling places and observe, without some sort of prearrangement and vetting.

My daughter and I take apart scrap camcorders for fun, and it's amazing how small they could make a CRT for the viewfinder. That screen's maybe 0.5 inch wide.

can't believe the car that runs on millions of tiny explosions transmitting energy through a complex series of oily metal parts doesn't last as long as the one that's four wheels attached to a battery

Supposedly they're looking for people either entirely invented, or who exist but have no idea they're signed up for the plan, so the insurer can pocket the subsidies and broker can pocket the commission. Dunno how "illegal aliens" relate to that or how many false positives they'll have though.

Music appreciation YouTube for breakdowns of well known songs (mostly dad rock because they're well known): 12tone, Charismatic Voice, some of Rick Beato ("what makes this song great?")

I've had that at NCDMV. They also triage - when you show up, before getting a number and waiting, they check your docs so you don't have to wait if they aren't what you need.

Even more recent stuff like 90s music: "He needs some cool tunes, not just any will suffice, but they didn't have Ice Cube so he bought Vanilla Ice", obsoleted by streaming music.

Someone there could tell you what they told the training to look for, in general terms, but nobody can tell you why video X gets ranking Y. Technically it's all old-sense algos, but some of those steps are "multiply by this here matrix, the numbers in which have no apparent rhyme or reason."
000
coreymutter.bsky.social @coreymutter.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
We see this in how the word "algorithm" is evolving into its own opposite: from "sequence of well-specified steps" to "inscrutable black box". Hadn't occurred to me until this thread that people probably think e.g. someone at YouTube knows how their recommender works in the old sense of "algorithm"

We can't accept absentee ballots at election day polling places in NC, and I invoke this when explaining it to people, and they're usually sympathetic: "They issued me 1500 ballots, if I bring back 1503, very uncomfortable questions will come up. Also please don't throw it away here, ...

I saw a TV movie / attempted pilot called "Underfunded" about the "Canadian Secret Service", their gadget guy was just there for the government-job bennies. "What you got for me?" "This deck of cards". "What's it do?" "It's just cards" kind of thing.

In NC, Gov Roy Cooper didn't leave the state for a long time because of a similar provision, when our Lt Gov was Mark "Nude Africa" Robinson.

It's a monolith illusion common on the socials. Going from "for any individual act of immigration enforcement, someone left of center on the socials will oppose it" to "the left as a whole is against all immigration enforcement" to "Democrats want open borders".

In today's info environment it's impossible to tell what's mainstream in an outgroup. You'll only ever see the most rage-inducing caricatures. He doesn't realize who his ingroup is now.

Lots of people are arguing (explicitly or implicitly) #2. The people referring you to mind-phil 101 seem to be on #1: there may well be special things about human cognition that LLMs don't / can't do, but some other Mere Machine could do in principle.
000
coreymutter.bsky.social @coreymutter.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
I think that's where the problem lies: mixing up "are LLMs thinking?" (probably many positions) and "there are things humans do that no Mere Machine could ever do even in principle" (implies souls or equivalent).

This is why I don't expect election day Fed shenanigans in Wake County. It would be terrible triage for them. Our 2 House districts are heavily D because of R gerrymandering. Our Senate race is no longer close enough to win by point shaving. A poor use of limited goons.

Because the Internet is so useful & essential, I actually think if LLM attacks make the Internet unusable, LLMs will get banned rather than make society attempt to function without Internet.

Mostly they are, but remote access/reporting is so useful that it's ~impossible to avoid entirely. E.g. an equipment vendor remotely debugging a problem. Cloud dashboards. Backups. SaaS usage. HVAC. Data will be needed in connected networks, maybe the xfer mechanism is secure, maybe not.

They had a decent set of useful insights, but as they extrapolated out to God, they could get stuck on weird things. I hate that the criticism is all "WeiRdOs", though I think the cultiness and hubris is useful to know about to understand the current stuff.

They had (have?) a DOGE-like hubris you rarely see outside the young, where it seems obvious you could Just Do <x> and fix things. "Sign up for cryonics" was at the time considered Obviously Correct.

I would have been in my 30s, married with kids, so no chance of reorienting my life around a project to systematize human ethics while actively disdaining existing moral philosophy. Gave it up in 2012 or so after getting a less-boring job. Took away lots of interesting tidbits.

I got some unsexy exposure to them long ago, 2010ish? I went to a few NC LessWrong meetups. When describing it to my wife she said "sounds like a cult" and I replied "oh, it totally is." This was not long after the Roko debacle, I think. They saw cryonics as a no-brainer.
