Sat for a coffee at Elm Row and counted the traffic for 15 minutes: 343 pedestrians 52 cyclists 2 cars Remind me why we’ve turned this public square into a car park? This is probably the best connected retail location in Scotland - trams, buses, walkable, busy cycle lane. Why ruin it?

Today is World Car Free Day and the end of European Mobility Week. Streets worldwide handed back to people: cleaner air, quieter roads, healthier, more active lives. Edinburgh, one of the UK's most congested cities? Business as usual. The quietest thing today is the council. Not even a post.

Part one asked why Edinburgh is stuck. Part two is the answer: what a cycling city is, and the colder, hillier places that already built one. @edi.bike @spokes.org.uk s.org.uk @wwctrustscot.bsky.social sky.social @livingstreetsedi.bsky.social ky.social @cyclingscotland.bsky.social nd.bsky.social

You don't know how good you have it until it's gone. The Edinburgh Trams extension to Newhaven faced fierce opposition and was hugely disruptive. Yet 87% of Leith businesses say it has boosted activity, while 86% saw a decline from the Princes St closure. Mass transit is good for business.

A cycling city isn’t really about bikes. It’s a fairer city, built around people instead of cars. Part one of three for the Edinburgh Inquirer, starting with the issues facing a car dependent capital. @spokes.org.uk @wwctrustscot.bsky.social @livingstreetsedi.bsky.social @cyclingscotland.bsky.social
