It was an exciting day out on the bank today! I saw my all-time favorite whale (Pitcher) who started breaching and flipper slapping during our trip, and found a pod of Atlantic white-sided dolphins on the way back home 🐬 #StellwagenBank #MarineLife #HumpbackWhale #Dolphins

The Grande Dame of Stellwagen Bank has returned! Salt is the first named and most well studied of the GoM humpback population and inspired 50+ years of whale research and conservation. We’re very excited to see her back again at her summer home! #Salt #HumpbackWhale #StellwagenBank #MarineLife

It’s still a little crazy to me that whales hang out so close Boston. And I’m so grateful I get to see them all the time 🐋🦑

Got some great looks yesterday at a few fin whales, lots of feeding humpbacks, and this big old Mola hanging out at the surface in #StellwagenBank #whales 🦑

It was such a great experience to be on the #RCUK2024 committee! Massive thanks to everyone who was able to come and make the day so special. From sea fireflies to creating a coral biobank, there was so much more to learn in coral science and conservation!

A pod of Livyatans (extinct macropredatory sperm whales) dives down leaving the surface of the ocean behind. The one in the center of the image has a calf following closely.A cross-section view of a shalloe sea where a hippo-like Moeritherium (primitive elephant relative) swims at the surface, followed curiously by a Basilosaurus (long primitive whale). The tail of the whale breaches the surface right besides the Moeritherium, while its body disappears into the depths. The image has a fisheye lens effect and some trees can be seen at one portion of the horizon. An underwater view of a mosasaur (marine lizard) carrying a seabird on its mouth. Beyond the surface, other seabirds can be seen flying, their silhouettes distorted by the water.A view of a tunnel aquarium, where one man is standing looking up towards the curved glass ceiling. An Elasmosaurus swims over the curved top of the tunnel, while the water around it is populated by different kinds of fish and a sea turtle.

In honour of this insane Homotherium cub news, here’s a lovely H. latidens canine we have at NHM London, one of the first discovered in England and among those used by Richard Owen to describe the species in 1846. Happy #FossilFriday!

A gentle reminder that if we miss the 1.5°C target (and we certainly will), the next target is 1.51°C and not 2°C. We need to keep fighting. Every tonne of CO₂ emitted makes the job of future CO₂ removal harder, and every 0.01°C of temperature increase makes the world more chaotic and dangerous.
Cover from The Economist from two years ago "Say goodbye to 1.5°C; why climate policy is off target". It has a graphic of the Earth with an apple on its head, and a arrow shot through the Earth.
