Despite the premise I found the overall experience delightful and full of character, would definitely recommend if you're looking for a nice 15 minute distraction. [3/3]

Mechanically this is a game about pressing the spacebar when the protagonist is below you, but he tries to get past you in increasingly surprising and convoluted ways. [2/3]

In Spike, a Love Story you are a spike trap in a mascot platformer, who is in love with the game's mascot. And, being a spike trap, the only way you can express your love is by pressing them into ketchup. matzerath.itch.io/spike-a-love-story [1/3]

Overall, Timespinner is a good metroidvania that follows the style of the classics with a forgettable story and a focus on a more chill experience. I 100%-ed it in about 12 hours and I think it's worth playing if you want to unwind or if you're looking for a PS1-era nostalgia hit. [6/6]

It's never bad, but I felt that it was forgettable. I also wish the game offered more pushback in terms of difficulty, as it's too easy to overlevel your character and trivialize the combat, but you could also read it as more relaxed baseline difficulty for normal people. [5/6]

The characters are a range of genders and sexualities, universally accepting and accommodating, there's no conflict outside of the bad guy, and the protagonist's character arc is the typical stepping up to face the challenge, and it all plays out in predictable and somewhat boring way. [4/6]

What I liked less is the 2010s-era microagression-aware Young Adult fantasy novel writing. [3/6]

The controls feel great, it has a good selection of abilities and environments, the map is reasonably sized and fun to uncover, and the pixel art, creature designs and music are all excellent. [2/6]

I've been playing Timespinner. Mechanically this is a 2d platformer metroidvania in the mold of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and its derivatives, but with extra time travel flavor. store.steampowered.com/app/368620/T… [1/6]

But minor nitpicks aside, it took me about 14 hours to 100% and I would recommend this if you like 2d platformers. [5/5]

It won't break any expectations, it's all well done. My only complaints are that world 1 is a bit too easy and can set the wrong expectations, and that the game's music quickly starts to grate and should be replaced with something else. [4/5]

It has an appealing visual style, the controls are responsive and satisfying, I liked how levels are presented both as collection challenges and time trials, and its boss battles are well designed and are there to test your core platforming skills. [3/5]

This game is comfort food: a competent platformer with a grappling hook that gets tricky, but remains fair. [2/5]

I found the challenge of putting together a story that's presented out of order fun. If you like detective games and are willing to engage your text comprehension skills in particular, TR-49 is a good time for 5-6 hours. [2/2]

What keeps it interesting are the varying terrain obstacles in the different maps the game presents, all the way up to crossing a big flooded river. You will solve it and it will get repetitive eventually, but it remains an excellent podcast game while the novelty remains. [3/4]

Overall I found it enjoyable, and it took me about 7 hours for each of the two main endings. It could be more polished, but this was the team's first published project and it's a good effort. Would recommend it if a more forgiving Mina the Hollower sounds fun to you. [7/7]

This is a separate story arc that is centered more on the affairs of the settlement, how you become a part of its community, and a dive into the world's lore. There are more areas to explore and items to find, it's not just more side quests. [5/7]

You can end the game right there with a satisfying ending, but what's unusual is that there's another half of the game after the credits. [4/7]

The first half of the game is a pretty formulaic Zelda adventure (that I found on the easier side) where the protagonist goes through his narrative arc and saves the day. [3/7]

The story campaign consists of more open areas that you'll have to plot an optimal path through, and the challenge levels tend more towards prescriptive linear gauntlets. [4/5]

This is an FPS about speedrunning through small (~60 second) levels to get the lowest completion time, similar to something like Neon White. Killing enemies reduces the time on the clock, so it's not just about beelining towards the level's objectives. [3/5]

It's well thought out, and I wouldn't mind another game in this setting. I found the prose to be funny and well-made, with good Deadpool-style banter that is delivered by actually likable middle-aged messes of characters, instead of some obnoxious main character types. [7/10]

The plot also has lots to like. It plays out like a typical geopolitical thriller, but in which humanity has successfully militarized magic and now it's just another kind of technology used by people and governments for good and ill. [6/10]

The abilities of each of your wizards are likewise designed to interact in interesting ways, and so the game wants you to solve each position and orchestrate crazy plays to get perfect turns, instead of forcing you to commit to your actions. This is fun. [5/10]

The writing carries this game, and it helps the few frustrations I had with it to fade into the background (unless you want to get all the achievements). I also found the game's music loops a bit grating, but that's neither here nor there. [5/6]

The minigames themselves are a mixed bag, they're sometimes funny, mostly mediocre, and there's amazingly terrible pinball that demonstrates everything I dislike about pinball. However, they are also used to develop the characters they are attached to. [3/6]
