If you're thinking - wasn't #bienstag yesterday? Well, it's #waspWednesday and this clearly isn't a photo of a bumblebee, it's a photo of a really tiny wasp perched on a petal at top. The bee's just there for scale. #Derbyshire, October 2026. #insects #bees #wasps #macrophotography

Close-up of a red and purple fuchsia flower hanging downwards, with a blonde, fluffy bumblebee burying its head in the purple bell of the flower, forelegs grasping it tightly, rear legs with tightly packed masses of yellow pollen. On one of the splayed-out red petals at top, a tiny bronze wasp sits in the autumnal sunshine.

For #waspWednesday - from August, an adorable Isodontia elegans, elegant grass-carrying wasp at #Seattle's #waspHeaven in #VolunteerPark, with her (or one of her sisters) building a nest for her babies with the dried grass, between the bricks of the water tower... #insects #wasps #macrophotography

Slender, brown-yellow wasp with translucent brown wings, on unfurling yellow-green leaves - gleaming black eyes looking towards the camera, long segmented antennae downwards and together.

Similar wasp, from the side and rear showing thread-like waist and striped yellow-red-black teardrop-shaped abdomen, packing strands of pale dry grass into a gap between dark bricks.

For #textureTuesday - more from the neglected negatives from #Seattle, late 2014, digitised with a digital camera, a macro lens, a film holder bodged together with Lego and a small LED panel light... #blackAndWhitePhotography #filmIsNotDead

Off-kilter view of alternating rows of square and smaller, rectangular blocks, horizontally ridged - cemented into slightly wavy lines with a concrete beam running vertically down, flush with the blocks. High-contrast black-and-white, oblique sunshine accentuating the slight surface topography.

Some autumnal #Derbyshire #butterflies for #macroMonday, from about a week ago. Vanessa atalanta, the Red Admiral, and possibly a male Celastrina argiolus, the Holly Blue? #insects #macrophotography #naturePhotography

Butterfly with wings outstretched, black-brown with red and white patterning around the edges - head, hairy body and abdomen aligned, complex eyes facing forwards, stripy white-and-black antennae leaning forwards - as it perches on an ivy flower in the autumn sunshine.

Small butterfly on green leaf in autumn sun - ragged wings partly folded, grey-white and violet blue with faded black edges, beady black compound eyes and dark, filamentous antennae with faint striping.

Bonus dragonfly shots from the other day. Aeshna cyanea, the Southern Hawker? #Derbyshire, September 2026. #insects #dragonflies #macrophotography #naturePhotography

Close-up of the head and thorax of a large dragonfly in autumn sun - bristly, dark legs grasping a part-shrivelled leaf. Large wrap-around eyes blue and grey-black, gleaming with optical depth - made from countless tiny lenses packed together in a hexagonal pattern. Front of head yellow with black spots - edged with short black hairs - and thorax yellow-green with thin dark stripes, with lighter curly hairs. At the centre of the thorax, four glittering, faceted, translucent wings erupt from a hollow - reaching out of view and out of focus.

Wider view of the whole dragonfly, wings outstretched - translucent facets almost grey-blue with possible age.

#FotoVorschlag - "Rückseite / Back, rear" I'm reminded of my 'Car arses' keyword in Lightroom. #SanFrancisco, June 2007...

Rear right corner of a very '70s-'80s American car - bright white paint with fine red outlining, big chrome bumper reflecting a sunny blue sky, angular rear red light (surrounded by chrome, naturally), flowing chrome-edged text reading "Grand Marquis", and rather incongruous 'GB' roundel and 'HORSE PERSON' stickers on the bumper.

For #waspWednesday - mystery wasp, with possible shieldbug / stinkbug prey, from the ever-bountiful #waspHeaven, #VolunteerPark #Seattle. Prionyx sp.? Sphex lucae? I'm not sure either are supposed to be preying on the pentatomidae - I need to ID this other bug! #insects #wasps #macrophotography

Muscular black wasp with fine silvery hairs and teardrop-shaped, glossy orange abdomen - wings folded, black eyes gleaming in the sun - upside-down pale insect grasped underneath its body, one if its antennae held in the wasp's jaws. On a green bramble leaf in the sunshine.

Same wasp, different angle - I inadvertently waggled the ground-level bramble around by stepping on a long trailing branch, but the wasp was absolutely staying put - no losing its prey!

In #Seattle for a bit - and yesterday I made it to '#waspHeaven' in #VolunteerPark (middle path around the water tower) to see if there were any wasps around. There certainly were! Grass-carrying wasp, Isodontia elegans, collecting a blade of grass... #macroMonday #insects #wasps #macrophotography

Slender, thread-waisted wasp - black and red with a golden yellow fuzz - intently chewing through a bent-over, drying grass stem, carefully grasping either side with daintily clawed feet.

Same wasp, looking away from camera, putting some effort into the grass collection - glossy red-brown transparent wings outstretched, rearmost feet curled around the grass stem,.

Same wasp, grass stem completely chewed through - all weight supported by middle legs holding on to the near-upright remaining grass stem, while jaws and other legs hold on to the newly detached section.

Wings and wasp a blur - rising upwards, grass stem payload firmly grasped.

Slender wasp, glossy black with orange stripes on abdomen and legs, and a couple of neatly defined white patches - wings folded; long, curved, finely segmented antennae with a white band across the middle. Gently sipping nectar from a mass of tiny white flowers. (The larvae might be nightmarish parasitoids reminiscent of Alien - the adults are delicate nectar-drinking vegetarians. Incredibly long and slender wasp seen flying from underneath - long abdomen, implausibly long ovipositor, both in a perfectly straight line from the head - blurred wings outstretched from the thorax - against a rough stone wall.
