#FotoVorschlag: "Heiter bis wolkig" / "Fair to partly cloudy" #silentSunday
Tail fins of passenger aircraft in low afternoon sun, one in foreground with an ornate, abstract red bird logo resembling an old sailing ship, against a white background - in the far distance, the hulking, snow-covered mass of Mount Rainier with wispy clouds and blue sky above. If you're thinking - wasn't #bienstag yesterday? Well, it's #waspWednesday and this clearly isn't a photo of a bumblebee, it's a photo of a really tiny wasp perched on a petal at top. The bee's just there for scale. #Derbyshire, October 2026. #insects #bees #wasps #macrophotography
Close-up of a red and purple fuchsia flower hanging downwards, with a blonde, fluffy bumblebee burying its head in the purple bell of the flower, forelegs grasping it tightly, rear legs with tightly packed masses of yellow pollen. On one of the splayed-out red petals at top, a tiny bronze wasp sits in the autumnal sunshine.

Slender, brown-yellow wasp with translucent brown wings, on unfurling yellow-green leaves - gleaming black eyes looking towards the camera, long segmented antennae downwards and together.Similar wasp, from the side and rear showing thread-like waist and striped yellow-red-black teardrop-shaped abdomen, packing strands of pale dry grass into a gap between dark bricks.

Butterfly with wings outstretched, black-brown with red and white patterning around the edges - head, hairy body and abdomen aligned, complex eyes facing forwards, stripy white-and-black antennae leaning forwards - as it perches on an ivy flower in the autumn sunshine.Small butterfly on green leaf in autumn sun - ragged wings partly folded, grey-white and violet blue with faded black edges, beady black compound eyes and dark, filamentous antennae with faint striping.

Single railway line at centre of frame, rusted tracks loosely surrounded by ballast, leading off into a vast plain of sagebrush - eventually curving off to the right, with a huge, eroded hill-mountain emerging from the flat horizon, beneath a forbidding clouded sky with patches of blue. Bonus dragonfly shots from the other day. Aeshna cyanea, the Southern Hawker? #Derbyshire, September 2026. #insects #dragonflies #macrophotography #naturePhotography
Close-up of the head and thorax of a large dragonfly in autumn sun - bristly, dark legs grasping a part-shrivelled leaf. Large wrap-around eyes blue and grey-black, gleaming with optical depth - made from countless tiny lenses packed together in a hexagonal pattern. Front of head yellow with black spots - edged with short black hairs - and thorax yellow-green with thin dark stripes, with lighter curly hairs. At the centre of the thorax, four glittering, faceted, translucent wings erupt from a hollow - reaching out of view and out of focus.Wider view of the whole dragonfly, wings outstretched - translucent facets almost grey-blue with possible age.

#FotoVorschlag - "Rückseite / Back, rear" I'm reminded of my 'Car arses' keyword in Lightroom. #SanFrancisco, June 2007...
Rear right corner of a very '70s-'80s American car - bright white paint with fine red outlining, big chrome bumper reflecting a sunny blue sky, angular rear red light (surrounded by chrome, naturally), flowing chrome-edged text reading "Grand Marquis", and rather incongruous 'GB' roundel and 'HORSE PERSON' stickers on the bumper.

Diagonal, plaster-revealing scar on old painted wall, revealing the former presence of a staircase - a dramatic shadow cast from the side, and the word 'SAVE' roughly spray-painted on a clear area.

#FotoVorschlag - "Leuchtturm / Lighthouse" Massive chalk cliffs - and somewhat smaller lighthouse - at #BeachyHead, East Sussex. September 2007. #lighthouses #cliffs #coast
Huge, beyond-vertical cliff of off-white chalk seen in profile, regularly interspersed by very narrow, dotted layers of darker stones - capped by a layer of scrubby grass, with two tiny human figures walking on top. Below the cliffs, a few broken rocks, choppy grey-blue water fading out to blue at the horizon - with a sturdy lighthouse painted with broad red and white stripes made insignificant by the massive cliffs looming over it.

For #waspWednesday, from Monday's walk along the #Thames - a lovely stripy ichneumon wasp on a cow parsley flower, identified (!) as a female Ichneumon sarcitorius, a parasitoid of moth caterpillars: www.naturespot.org/species/ichneumo… #insects #wasps #macrophotography
Slender wasp, glossy black with orange stripes on abdomen and legs, and a couple of neatly defined white patches - wings folded; long, curved, finely segmented antennae with a white band across the middle. Gently sipping nectar from a mass of tiny white flowers. (The larvae might be nightmarish parasitoids reminiscent of Alien - the adults are delicate nectar-drinking vegetarians. For #macroMonday - a frog! In a pond! From yesterday - kindly letting me get the macro lens remarkably close... #Derbyshire #frogs #macrophotography #naturePhotography #photoMonday
Close-up of the head of a large frog with bulbous eyes poking just above the water, iridescent green-gold-black iris around deep black pupil. The water is distorted through surface tension - with peculiar bent reflections of an unidentifiable background.

From earlier today, while dodging the rain showers - a Welsh poppy... #Derbyshire #flowers #bloomscrolling #macrophotography
Vivid orange petals with large drops of rainwater concentrating the oblique sunlight, against a blurred green background.

#silentSunday
Dense woodlands, a mix of conifers and deciduous trees - in autumn, with leaves turning brown. Low sun filters through from the background, shadows everywhere. Derbyshire, November 2020.

#FotoVorschlag : Wolken // Clouds - a faintly ridiculous sunset with a bonus #SpaceNeedle at lower left. #Seattle, July 2012. #sunsets #clouds
Puffy clouds, dark purple-grey with a blue-grey sky behind - underlit by a setting sun with vivid orange-pink light, fading towards orange in the distance. At lower left, the futuristic Space Needle tower is silhouetted against the sunset.

For #saturdaySolitude - the collapsed hulk of a vast robot, perhaps? That, or electrical equipment from the demolition of Convention Place station, #Seattle - August 2018.
Piles of large electrical boxes - dented, eroded cylinders and cuboids, with cable fragments - slumped up against a pale, concrete wall in an almost humanoid manner, beneath edges of roadways and graffiti-covered walls.

Last of the current #jumpingSpiders for #spiderSaturday - those Salticus sp. from last weekend's wall safari... (At some point the weather will warm up again for more bug action! It's currently raining.) #Derbyshire #spiders #macrophotography
Black and white stripy jumping spider on a rough old stone wall, facing towards the camera, looking intently downwards with gleaming black eyes, as if ready to pounce.Same spider, a moment later - looking up past the camera.A different black and white jumping spider (a male, judging by the large mandibles and pedipalps?) stalking its way up the landscape of the stone wall - an out-of-focus red mite in the foreground shows just how small this world is.Jumping spider looking up past the camera, at a quirky angle.

For #spiderSaturday (which is apparently a thing) - more Salticus sp. photos from last weekend's wall safari. (From the 'like' counts, people like these little things even more than bees! And vastly more than other spiders eating bees. Ahem.) #Derbyshire #spiders #jumpingSpiders #macrophotography
Black and white striped jumping spider seen front-on - large, gleaming black eyes looking past the camera - a magnificent little creature resplendent on its tiny mountain hillside of lichen-encrusted stone wall.Another black and white jumping spider, timidly exploring a slight dip in the stonework.Still another black and white jumping spider - on a near-vertical cliff, facing downwards, but with head raised to inspect something in the distance.Another jumping spider! This one has hairy eyebrows. So awesome.
