What I enjoyed most about your article is that in none of your scenarios does the developer absorb/eat the development charges. The incumbent homeowners say “Make greedy developers take less profit”. They’ll build elsewhere. Or not at all. This is the big myth that needs to be shouted down.

Procurement in the City of Ottawa seems severely messed up. The Feds do it differently … and arguably better. The province of Quebec … less good.

Great article. 60 yrs ago, our urban suburb was 25K and growing. Now, we’re 20K and declining steadily. Smaller households. Older households. Few attractive options for downsizing. As a result, we have oodles and oodles of empty bedrooms. One of my mapping faves censusmapper.ca/maps/3516?z=...

Not exactly. I had read the coverage the same way at first, but the non-gasoline majority also includes hybrids and plug-in hybrids … not purely battery EVs. I’m a battery EV convert myself, so I’m happy to see the trend … but it hasn’t flipped yet.

That particular CAQ policy was infuriating, short-sighted, and spiteful. I wish that Milliard had taken the opportunity to explain the damage done … in more detail, and with receipts.

Swim lesson registration are like the Hunger Games. When local contributers lose priority to those who contribute elsewhere, it makes them less receptive to tax increases. Which, in turn, makes it less easy to building more public pools.

Agree. For this critical signature icon, the country deserves, demands even, to reach for design excellence … even if it means widening our comfort zone for risk. We’ve shown ourselves up to the challenge. Let’s stretch a little more.

It’s wide open. He doesn’t need to annex Canada to put “Trumpland” on American maps. Lake Ontario became Lake America in two days. Google quickly served US naming to US users. The world calls it Canada. What if Americans see Trumpland. When does a map stop describing reality and start making it?

Daily runner here. Sidewalks are often uneven. Driveway and parking lots cuts have a cross-slope. Asphalt is *slightly* less debilitating on the body. But, then again, I get frustrated with the walkers on the path. 🤷🏾‍♂️

The article uses a description I haven’t seen before: "a nearly 30-bedroom infill development” I like this. It should be standard for all multi-family bldgs. It provides human texture. It also hints to unit mix. A 15-unit/30-BR is very diff from a 25-unit/30-BR project. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

I take your point. Though land value per sq.m. Is gonna be significantly higher in Centretown. Why not do a pro rata calc of potential new tax revenue by the proposed project? Presumably, the land value in the sector won’t change much, but the assessable building values will.

Conrad Peart @conradpeart.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
I appreciate this type of analysis. But why not compare to a more comparable sector? Centretown tax base gets a heavy lift from both higher land value and non-residential mill rates. I suspect that your point will still be self-evident, but it would be more apples-to-apples. My 2 cents.

My 89yo mom might be the outlier.  watch, phone, tablet, laptop, tv. Daily (sometimes hourly 😉) texting. Wordle streaker. Duolingo streaker. YouTube devotee. Tech has been her lever, not her constraint. But she’s definitely not the norm. And I ❤️ her dearly … with or without the gizmos.

This article frustrates me. Good points. Dodgy numbers. Arbitrary group tiers. Medians of medians. Income & wealth conflation. StatsCan has the data and classifications. CMHC has the analysis. Build arguments from strong foundation. Else, it doesn't pass the 'research' sniff-test. That stinks.

Interesting data table. A ‘per household’ metric is illustrative, for sure. But how do you account for commercial and industrial tax revenues, which have vastly different mill rates, but don’t necessarily contribute to the population or household counts?

I don’t have an answer, but I wonder if the trade-off is offset by the potential for improved efficiency, lower congestion, lower emissions, and a raft of other things I haven’t thought of. But I strongly support your concern about the impact of weight on our infrastructure.
