Artists feel pressured to make new art too quickly at the moment. Normalise artists fucking disappearing for months. Just walk off into the woods for a year and come back with a single sketch. It’s good for you

Here's my new cover for this year's @2000ad.bsky.social Sci-Fi Special. When I was a kid, being bought a Summer Special comic was the highlight of a day to the seaside; so it's great to get the chance to continue that tradition.

Currently on page 20. I think that's the most pages I've ever drawn for myself without getting bored and moving on to something else (most usually something paid). There's a very real danger that I might actually *gasp* finish this one. 😱
Comic page. Two Moon-buggies come to a halt near a giant hole where a communications array and a third buggy should be. The four astronauts get out of the two buggies and discuss whether two missing astronauts are in the hole and how they're going to get down there to check. Riveting stuff.

Bad news, lads.
A scan of a very old newspaper item. The heading is COMIC BOOK FAN. The text reads: Salt Lake City - (AP) - Mrs Henry Garn Thompson told the court her husband frequently purchased comic books by the dozen, then sat and read them all day. Judge J. Allan Crockett granted her a divorce on grounds of non-support.

Petrol Head. Dunno if it’s a reaction to AI or what but I’ve been yearning to do stuff on paper recently. I’m normally very digital-reliant and I loathe inking by hand (I’m shit at it), but I like coloured pencils and my airbrush, so I did this last night. Made some mistakes but happy. Doing more.

Ah boo. Jack Vettriano has died. Loved his work - and his general disdain for artworld snobbery. This, from 2014, was my riff on one of his more famous paintings. Also struck by the thought that he and both editors of this comic are now gone… Bah…
Two ladies enjoying the beach while a butler offers shade. Based on a painting by Jack Vettriano, except the butler here is an alien lizard figure, while three planets orbit close by. Because that’s how science works.

One page comic we were pretty proud of, from a pandemic anthology that didn’t happen. Script by @lizzieboylesays.bsky.social Lettering by @campbell-letters.bsky.social Cameo by @lukewinch.bsky.social
Settlers on Mars, communicating with Houston control, finding reasons to stay in their base and not go outside. But who is doing the communicating?

I was working six days a week on a ridiculously stressful project at this point. Couldn’t sleep. My day off was spent playing a ridiculously stressful TTRPG, online with friends. There was no visible end point in either. Then there was the whole ‘world falling to bits’ outside. I just had this one-pager for …relaxing?

Which is maybe why it’s so detailed?? 😀

GenAI has polluted image search results, especially for animal pics. It’s now basically impossible to find accurate art references. Enter this: a repository of open-access, AI-free images of wild & exotic taxa. Artists creating *without AI* have blanket permission for derivative/transformative use.
