Today's @xkcd.com
It's a stickman holding a hammer, lifting up his leg, and saying:

"Listen up, leg. I've been sending you rich, oxygenated blood for years, while you send me worthless used-up blood with no oxygen. Time to teach you a lesson about not ripping me off!"

It is captioned: tariffs

A open letter to Niagara politicians and the Ontario government: the Niagara Region deserves better GO Train service. Only running 3 trips/day makes travel worse for everyone - including drivers on the QEW - and leaves billions in economic activity on the table. #ONpoli #cdnpoli #transit
Hello,

My name is Connor Peters, a Brock University alumnus and former resident of the Niagara Region who frequently travels back and forth to the Region from Toronto.

I am writing to express my concern with the lack of regular GO Train service to Niagara Falls and St Catharines.

As we know, Tourism makes up a significant portion of Ontario's economy (4.1% of GDP, according to the Ministry) and these numbers are even greater in Niagara.

Niagara sees visitors from all over the world to witness the Falls, tour wine country, tour historic sites, etc.

If we want to accommodate all of those visitors, and make their trip accessible, we should make travelling to and from Niagara as easy as possible. Currently that is not the case.Trains only run three times daily:

Leaving Union, weekday
 9am, 5:30pm, 10pm
Leaving Niagara Falls, weekday
 6:30am, 1pm, 9pm
Leaving Union, weekend
 9am, 1pm, 6:30pm
Leaving Niagara Falls, weekend
 12pm, 4pm, 9:15pm

This leaves significant gaps in the travel schedule for most people who are not commuting for work, and the buses do not make up for those gaps in service. GO buses are far less physically accessible, as they are much smaller and require most passengers to climb the stairs.

By failing to provide adequate service between Canada's largest city and the many offerings of the Niagara Region, we are likely leaving millions - even billions - of dollars of economic activity on the table. Those travelling from Niagara to Toronto end up driving to Burlington, which means more traffic for the personal and commercial drivers travelling around Lake Ontario. This also affects GO Bus service, making visitors less likely to travel. Sub-par train service means that Torontonians without a car may simply choose not to come to Niagara at all, or cut their trip short to make a specific train.

Almost every Niagara-bound trip looks like this on the platform in the summer:
[Picture of Niagara Falls GO, with a platform packed full of people exiting the train]
I understand that there are multi-year plans in place for station improvements at St Catharines and Niagara Falls stations, as well as new stations in Western Niagara. But we don't need to wait for those stations to simply add one or two more train trips, especially on weekends in the summer.

I would hope that you would use the influence of your office to inspire more collaboration with all levels of government to get more people and economic activity moving.

Best,
Connor Peters

It makes me LOL when stories come out like this St Catharines Councillor complains about the Strong Mayor powers being used for housing, calling it "undemocratic"... then council approved the development 8-4 anyway. 1,902 units (10% affordable) with 1,682 parking spaces #onmuni #cdnpoli

Hot take: the federal government should buy out failed developments if they're running out of money during construction. 40 storey tower failed to sell all the condos? Feds pay $80M for it and fill it with below-market rentals instead. #TOpoli #housing

Did some back of the napkin math and realized that if the government wanted to solve the housing crisis in Ontario, it would cost the same price as Doug Ford's election bribe, and more or less pay for itself over time. #cdnpoli #onpoli #TOpoli

We go through this cycle every few months in Niagara: 1) a development is proposed, with higher density and average parking count 2) one half of council say it's too big 3) the other half complains about traffic It's downtown in a city. Just put less parking if you don't want traffic

Hot take - I love paying taxes It's so great that I can spend less than 1% of my income on healthcare, my neighbourhood doesn't need a GoFundMe for potholes, transit usually comes on time... Purchasing power comes from economies of scale, and that's the best. So much cheaper per person.

"Traffic is bad in Toronto because of bike lanes" is simply propaganda. You are not 'in traffic', you are traffic. If you're selfish enough to obstruct a streetcar in an intersection, block a crosswalk, or park in live lanes, you 100% deserve a ticket. #TOpoli

"Heritage property" is such an overused term. If it doesn't serve a historical, cultural, or architectural purpose, there's no reason to prevent housing. Application to turn this 8-unit apartment building into a 3 -storey, 26 unit building comes into question because of the neighbourhood.

We could fix the city and its traffic problem overnight and it would only cost a couple bucks in printer paper and duct tape... Permanently ban parking in live lanes of traffic, not just during rush hour. Street parking is selfish, and unproductive. Get people moving. #TOpoli
