And a second note on Graham Greene who, I learned yesterday, went to Dublin in 1923 as an 18 -year-old and then walked to Waterford (over a hundred miles). Ireland was in bad shape at the time, having not recovered from the Civil War + the ongoing scrap for independence substack.com/@connla/note...

I enjoyed this documentary about a teacher in Karabash, a mining town by the Ural Mountains. Pavel (the teacher) documents the Putin administration's moves to control public perception about the war with the Ukraine by filming his school and its environs from day to day. Pavel now lives in Prague.

Another recent watch: A beautiful & tender film about a Beirut couple, sweethearts at school (briefly) that meet again as adults, they're seemingly incompatible yet swiftly fall in love on the eve of the woman's departure for Germany. So she stays. It's bittersweet stuff—full of humour and sadness.

In July 1979, three years before he won the Nobel Prize for literature, Gabriel Garcia Marquez came to Vietnam with his wife and kids. They visited Hanoi and Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) — his article ‘Vietnam por dentro’was first published in Spanish then later translated by Rolling Stone.

It's Independence Day here in Vietnam 🇻🇳 ... As good a reason as any to post this classic pic by John Ramsden, an Englishman. who lived in Hanoi in the very early 1980s, serving the British Diplomatic Service. He apparently took around 1,800 photos, and has a book titled Hanoi After the War.

In July 1965, as US jets bombed North Vietnam, the British Prime Minister Harold Wilson sent an unlikely emissary east: a talkative, left-wing Welsh MP with an old acquaintance in Hanoi and an improbable hope of opening a path to peace. Was there any hope? connla.substack.com/p/nothing-ne...

In the summer of 1965, Washington tried to bomb North Vietnam to the negotiating table. Britain tried to open a door to Hanoi. But Washington, London and Hanoi were each looking at a different war.
