Two extraordinary charts from today’s PISA test results: 1) School test scores continue to collapse internationally, underscoring how this is no longer a Covid effect but sustained decline. Those falls in reading and maths are equivalent to about two years of lost schooling.

For many folks, the most frequent and sustained encounter with public sector investment comes through their public schools. Well-funded, well-functioning public education is essential to the idea that democracy works for families in their everyday lives.

Studying curriculum in my doc program this semester, I realized that standardization is born out of perceived injustice, but has never been leveraged to address root causes, nor has the way ‘standardization’ been wielded been studied or reexamined to be effective.

To the extent parents distrust public schools, it's not because of COVID, it's because there's been an orchestrated, decades-long, right-wing attack on public education to keep it chronically underfunded, to stoke cultural wars, and to seduce frustrated parents & lawmakers w/ privatization schemes.

Enrollment increase in Pittsburgh Public Schools too. Yet both Pittsburgh and Philadelphia are using 'enrollment decline' as a reason for massive school closures. Closing schools is lazy and unnecessary. Invest in our public schools -fix systemic issues- and enrollment will continue to increase.
