I love that Bill Clinton will likely be the one that makes it possible to indict politicians for contempt.

"Obedience is never total: every regime of compliance provokes the possibility of disobedience. The challenge for educational theory is to articulate how such spaces of disobedience might be fostered in algorithmic societies;

It seems to me there is an emerging consensus that LLM GenAI is detrimental to critical thinking. Can anyone make a counter argument grounded in research?

First academic paper to make me cry. "In childhood, <obedience> appears as habituation: to obey the platform is simply to inhabit the world (Quadflieg et al. 2022)."

I'm new to this selling thing and just don't have any pots, no inventory. I'm a fulltime high school computer science teacher. :)

OMG! We did so good! The price of our table was about 20% of our revenue. We covered our costs and a bit more. Maybe this could support my pottery habit?

In a quiet conversation with a student who wanted to ask a question but couldn't figure out how to frame it, he came out to our table that he thinks he is anti-AI. This was not a space that he felt he could explore his concerns.

And, as they have learned to do, they stayed inside the boundaries setup by the adults. It was a place for student voice, but it was also crafted to ensure those student voices stayed within the boundaries.

In the closing aiEDU patted themselves on the back for having done such a great job letting students take the lead. Students were absolutely the bright spot. In general, students were very skeptical, very discerning, thinking critically.

They were told "yes, it can inhibit cognitive development, but still, definitely you should use it." They were told to "train it on your voice".

They were told they don't need, or soon won't need to learn Trigonometry because Philosophy will be more important. Students asked if it was OK that the models were now being trained on synthetic data and they were told "that's a huge challenge" but still, definitely, you should use it.

When students asked about bias inherent in LLM's They were told that apps built by teachers can counter the bias. That is NOT true. They were told "you should understand it enough to not trust it".

The event started with a panel of experts. But none of them were technical and all of them were AI in Edu advocates. Student questions about the environmental cost were brushed aside by comments like "yes, it uses a lot of electricity".

I spent the day today at an advocacy event for #AIinEdu put on by World Saavy and aiEDU. The event was advertised as an opportunity for student voice but the message was crafted from the very beginning that AI is inevitable in edu and necessary to be prepared for "the workplace".

I completely disagree that we need to use the structures and tactics of the right. "The Master's tools will never Dismantle the Master's House." The left is so tied to Capitalist success that we can only be just left of craven.

The framework already exists that opposes the current obedience based education. Liberatory Education is rigorous, effective and has a very long history. White liberals keep fucking it all up by being just left of oppression. Freire, Betina Love, Ruha Benjamin, Zaretta Hammond, Lisa Delpit...

I teach in the tradition of Liberatory Pedagogy. I am confident in my teaching when I am teaching but it is so counter-cultural that in adult spaces I shrink. The foundation of this Pedagogy is student choice. This does not mean an abdication by the teacher. It's harder than obedience.

LLM GenAI is only potentially valuable to those very few people in a position to manipulate massive numbers of users. Anyone with aspirations of social control is easily scared into massive investment because they see their users as tipping into the control of their oligarch peers.

If you look at the direction and intention of tech products since Behavioral Economics made clear that users can be manipulated to make irrational decisions, we have seen tech products move away from designing for value delivered to the user to designing for value extracted *from* the user.

LLM GenAI is a product that no one ever asked for. Many people see the massive investment with no justifying revenue as evidence of a bubble; however, I don't think this is the whole story.
