On Tues 29 September the Master and over twenty members of the Worshipful Company of Nurses attended Common Hall for the election of the new Lord Mayor of London-a tradition that stretches back more than 800 years. A proud moment for the Company, and a reminder that representation shapes influence.

Thursday 25 September The Master, IPM and Chair of the Company of Nurses Charity Trust (CNCT) and Lizzie Clarke, Assistant Secretary to the CNCT Board of Trustees attended a tea party at The House of Lords. This was the Cavell Annual event where we heard about their three year strategy.

On Wednesday 23 September, two teams from the Company competed in a quiz held in aid of City Giving Day. There were many teams competing entered at a variety of locations around the City . One of our teams won the venue competition !

21 July - The Master, with Julia Mingay representing the Worshipful Company of Nurses Charity, joined the City and St George’s University Awards ceremony to present the Worshipful Company of Nurses Charity Awards-to 3 nurses for outstanding academic achievement in their final dissertation.

On July 15 we welcomed three Apprentices: Amir is in his final placement of Adult Nursing at Kings Nadia Shaaban - is starting her 2nd Year of a Masters Degree at City St George’s Ryan Williamson-has just completed his final placement of a Masters Degree at Canterbury Christchurch.

The Master and her Consort attended the 400th Anniversary of the Worshipful Company of Upholders first Letters Patent granted by King Charles 1. The original was lost so a new one was unveiled at Guildhall. Also the Circle of Life was unveiled for the first time.

A small group of us attended a fascinating lecture given by Sir Chris Whitty who spoke about the history and effects of infection and its impact on surgery through the ages until present time. Thanks to the Worshipful Company of Barbers for inviting us.

Yesterday, The Master, Christine Anderson and 20 Liverymen of the Company joined other Liverymen at Common Hall, Guildhall: the twice yearly election assembly for the City of London. Afterwards the group joined with other Livery Companies for a friendly lunch at Innholders’ Hall.

Day 3 - the Company visited the Belgian Senate. This was the building in which the Court Marshall trial of Edith Cavell took place. There is a plaque commemorating those who were tried and executed in the Senate during the Great War 1914-1919.

The final and poignant visit of the second day was the site of the shooting range cemetery where Edith Cavell was executed.  The Master laid a wreath on behalf of the Company.

On day 2 the Company then travelled to Brussels.  They visited the School of Nursing where Edith Cavell was the Matron at the first school of nursing in Belgium. The Company visited the prison where Edith Cavell spent her last 10 weeks.

The Company attended the evening ceremony at the Menin Gate, a war memorial in Ypres dedicated to the soldiers who were killed in WW1 and whose graves are unknown. Every evening the Last Post is sounded. It was a privilege to attend this ceremony. The Master laid a wreath on behalf of all nurses.

As part of our 10 year celebrations members of the Company travelled to Belgium to visit sites associated with Edith Cavell. The tour members of the Company visited Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, WW1 burial ground. The Master paid respects at the grave of Staff Nurse Spindler killed by shrapnel.

The Master and Clerk attended the “Oiling of the Gates” at Temple Bar. Members of the Honourable Artillery Company’s Pikemen and Musketeers lined up for the occasion, alongside representatives of City livery companies. The "Oiling of the Gates" is an historic ceremonial event in the City of London.

The Company was represented at the Post Big Curry Lunch Reception held at Carpenters' Hall where The Lady Mayor Dame Susan Langley announced the grand total raised at this year’s Big Curry Lunch of just over £400,000. Members of the Company supported this event this year as volunteer stewards.
