Woohoo! What a beautiful graphic to either start or end a book with… (Hm… I feel a strong urge to buy a shirt that says "YAM" on it.) But *now* I'm thinking about a Japanese translation of Minion!!—it'd be fun, but it might absolutely suck to make/modify a JP font to preserve the fun lettering.

Ayo + Rosebud comic from earlier this year that seems thematically appropriate for the season! 🎃 #art #oc #ayo #rosebud

Rosebud takes off her heels, expressing how hungry she is, as Ayo checks the fridge for food.
Inside she finds a spoiled carton of leftovers (cartoonishly sprouting fungus).
She suggests to Rosebud that they order pizza instead, Rosebud enthusiastically agrees.
Cut to a 3-part montage of Ayo putting on a skull necklace, adjusting her eyeliner (important!), and holding a book with a wailing face on its front cover (spooky!).

Ayo reads the spooky book as Rosebud leans over cautiously, asking what Ayo's doing.
Ayo explains that local pizza delivery takes too long so she's planning to use BLACK MAGIC to order one instead (much to Rosebud's disapproval).
Rosebud gives in to Ayo's idea, and asks how the pizza-creature is summoned, to which Ayo explains: "Blood"
A large SLICE is heard, as Ayo drips blood from her tentacle-finger onto a sigil within the book.

Suddenly, a geiser of water blasts out of the book with a disgusting "BLARG!"
Ayo drops the book to the floor with a "SPLAT!" as a skeletal hand thrusts from the book's centerfold.
Ayo and Rosebud look on in horror as an undead, tentacled being (wearing a chef's hat) climbs out of the book.

The creature hands Ayo and Rosebud their pizza before cutely descending back into the book, waving goodbye and thanking the two for asking of its services.
Ayo and Rosebud pause for comedic effect.
Smash cut to Ayo and Rosebud on the floor, still drenched from the events before, eating their pizza.
Ayo thinks the pizza could be better.
FIN.

I’m incredibly proud of this piece and so grateful to the librarians who spoke with me. I wish I could say the situation has improved over the past year and change (it’s generally intensified), but that just means there’s still work do to.

Was looking up Saint Young Men and did a double take. Huh!? Did Japan start naming real-life stuff like Ultraman monsters? "Typhoon Hagibis"?

A screenshot of a passage from the Wikipedia page for Saint Young Men. It's cut off at the start, but it reads as follows:

"...October 5 and 12, 2019. Only the first half of the second season was broadcast in October because of the Typhoon Hagibis and it had to be rescheduled to January 25, 2020. The ten-episode third season premiered and finished before it on NHK, on January 11 and 18, 2020 respectively.

Every time I see the Tick holding this coffee cup, I think of the damn Shinji image of him doing the exact same thing. At this point they're brothers in arms to me.

Looking up "upside down question mark stroke order" and *really* hoping someone would for reason have described it as "stroke order" (it's the best way I can describe it but clearly not the appropriate term)… Unfortunately it seems people only ever want to know how to *type* "¿"

I'm thinking about making(and maintaining) a list of "reverse wasei eigo," or 洋製日本語 (yōsei nihongo)—terms that appear to be Japanese, but were actually defined under English contexts. (I actually even did a school project about this once.) Would anybody be interested in seeing that?

I'm imagining a guy who is fully convinced that Bakugo is an homage/rip-off of the Human Bomb, a semi-obscure superhero from the 1940s.

A screenshot of Wikipedia. Beneath a heading for "Roy Lincoln" and a subheading for "Quality Comics," it states the following:

"Roy Lincoln is originally a scientist working with his father on a special explosive chemical called '27-QRX'. When Nazi spies invade his lab and kill his father, he ingests the chemical to prevent it from falling into their hands. As a result, Lincoln gains the ability to cause explosions in any object he touches, particularly through his hands. He can only control his abilities using special asbestos gloves, which were retconned to be 'Fibro-wax' gloves after..."

It cuts off there.

I've read it along with all of Thorsby's other comics! (Well... other than the currently ongoing one, I guess.) And now I'm learning that Thorsby's even on Bluesky. I think... we have a lot of overlapping taste in comics.

I remember genuinely crying as I was reading the ending, which isn't something that happens super frequently for me (though I will say that that also happened for The Maxx... which I also saw on your list. Damn, what a good series).

010

Commander Cello @commandercello.bsky.social · 26/09/2026

Yeah, Meowth seems to be an untouched element for stuff like that, weirdly enough. Even the clear-as-day, super-obvious Jessie and James homages in Big City Greens are devoid of a third member (anthropomorphic animal or otherwise).

010

Commander Cello @commandercello.bsky.social · 26/09/2026

Yeah. I just wish some of his art style traits caught on more... he always draws such luscious lips, which really stands out now when so many artists seem to be completely afraid of (or at least against) drawing them.

010

Commander Cello @commandercello.bsky.social · 26/09/2026

Oh, sure, but Azumanga Daioh feels like a much weirder pull than… whatever other more action-centric series could've been used for inspiration. I guess I'm underestimating how hugely popular Azumanga Daioh was at the time (everyone still says "waifu," after all… even if they don't know its origins).

000

Commander Cello @commandercello.bsky.social · 26/09/2026

They do seem to be modeled after the typical Time Bokan "incompetent series villain with two henchmen"... but admittedly they do depart a lot from that main formula (plus it's never really been brought into English). I'd be tempted to bring up SatAM Sonic or OK K.O., but those aren't right either.

If anything, maybe this just points out how infrequently wavy hair is used in manga/anime character design. If it wasn't for that, it wouldn't have tipped me off.

130

Commander Cello @commandercello.bsky.social · 26/09/2026

Jokes aside, I do honestly find the underlying concepts interesting—I get modeling Wolverine after Vegeta, and the Rei-looking Black Cat makes sense because Evangelion is a popular action series… but using *Yukari* as a reference point? I know Azumanga Daioh was popular, but the genre flip is weird!

120

Commander Cello @commandercello.bsky.social · 26/09/2026

Hey... back off from Adam Warren... if *he* had done all of this, it would've looked better...! (Plus, the original Steve Rogers Captain America would've been good-looking then, too. I don't want to see a generic guy in a vaguely sci-fi suit...)

Every so often I remember the Marvel Mangaverse version of Captain America, and how she seems to be clearly modeled after Yukari from Azumanga Daioh. *Why* did they do this? It confounds me.
