Last year, PSU's Comic Studies program hosted two panels at Rose City Comic Con. We are excited to announce that the Comic Studies program will be returning to this year's RCCC with two more panels!
• An Education in Comics will be held on Saturday, September 6th, from 12:15 - 1:00 p.m. in room E145-146. This roundtable will focus on comics in the university, featuring instructors from Portland State University, including Brian Michael Bendis, Jon Holt, Diana Schutz, David Walker, Douglas Wolk, and Susan Kirtley, as well as comics theorist Scott McCloud, who will examine the role comic art plays in the academy and discuss opportunities for students interested in studying the medium in colleges and universities.
• A Comics Education: Studying Comics in College will be held on Sunday, September 7th, from 3:45 - 4:30 p.m. in room E145-146. This roundtable will showcase the perspectives of current and graduated students who study comics, offering time for them to share what they’ve learned by creating and studying comics as part of Portland State University’s Comics Studies Certificate program. For students, teachers, and fans, this can’t miss panel will showcase comics in action as tools for learning. 

RCCC is located at the Oregon Convention Center with the following hours:
• Friday, September 5, 2025 - 1 PM to 8 PM (programming until 10:00 PM)
• Saturday, September 6, 2025 - 10 AM to 7 PM (programming until 10:00 PM)
• Sunday, September 7, 2025 - 10 AM to 5 PM

The full programming schedule is available now on the Rose City Comic Con website and mobile app. The program features a ton of comics-related panels!

Introducing the creator of the Comics Studies program - Susan Kirtley!
Susan Kirtley (she/her) is a professor at Portland State University and the creator of the PSU Comics Studies program. She is the author of the Eisner-winning “Lynda Barry: Girlhood through the Looking Glass” (2013), and co-editor of “With Great Power Comes Great Pedagogy: Teaching, Learning, and Comics” (2020). Her book, “Typical Girls: The Rhetoric of Womanhood in Comic Strips” was the 2022 Charles Hatfield Prizewinner for the best book in Comics Studies. She is currently the Editor of “Inks: The Journal of the Comics Studies Society.”

Introducing the associate director of the Comics Studies program - J.J. Vazquez!
J.J. Vazquez is a professor at Portland State University. He's the associate director of the PSU Film and PSU Comics Studies programs, curating cool events for both departments. He is the Producer of "Dragon Ball Z: Light of Hope" (2018), "The Run" (2021), and "American Track League" (2024). He also co-writes and directs video commercials for Trackland Productions.

Comics Confluence Festival Panelist Announcement - Andréa Gilroy! Andréa Gilroy will be joining David Walker and Sean Edgar for the Publishing & Marketing Comics panel from 3:45 - 4:45 p.m. on May 17.
Books with Pictures in Eugene is independent and locally operated by Andréa Gilroy, who earned her PhD in Comparative Literature from the University of Oregon (UO) in 2015. Her dissertation focused on comics history and the way comics represent identity. After graduation, she has worked as a comics educator teaching courses at UO (including acting as 2016-17 Interim Director of the UO Comics & Cartoon Studies Program) and PSU, serving on the board of ICAF, co-curating cool exhibits, and speaking at conferences and conventions. She also made Comics Crash Course. She is thrilled to build a space that uses the power of comics and the passion of fans to build community.

Comics Confluence Festival Panelist Announcement - Steve Lieber! Steve Lieber will be hosting the How to Make Comics with Words and Pictures panel from 2:30 - 3:30 p.m. on May 18.
Steve Lieber's comics have been published by DC, Marvel, Dark Horse, Image, and many other publishers, but he's best known for his Eisner-award winning work on "Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen" and "Whiteout." His most recent books are "Backflash" at Dark Horse Comics, and "Metamorpho" at DC.

Comics Confluence Festival Panelist Announcement - Diana Schutz! Diana Schutz will be joining Shelly Bond for the Working with Your Editor panel from 3:45 - 4:45 p.m. on May 18.
Diana Schutz is an award-winning comic editor who edited some of Will Eisner’s work while at Dark Horse Comics. She has also edited iconic series such as “Sin City,” “Usagi Yojimbo,” and “American Splendor.” Schutz was the first woman to be inducted into the Canadian Comic Book Creator Hall of Fame and was inducted into the Will Eisner Hall of Fame in 2023.

Shelly Bond is an Award-winning Comic Book Editor with over thirty years of red ink on her hands. She’s worked with industry luminaries including Grant Morrison, and for publishers including DC Comics/Vertigo and Image among others. Bond is writer/creator of “Filth & Grammar: The Comic Book Editor’s (Secret) Handbook” and editor of “Bitter Root.”

Sean Edgar is the marketing director and an editor at creator-owned publisher DSTLRY. He’s formerly worked for publishers including First Second, Image Comics, The Atlantic, Z2, and Paste Magazine. He’s also the author of "Art of Over the Garden Wall" and a former animal trainer at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.

Comics Confluence Festival Panelist Announcement - Kelly Sue DeConnick! Kelly Sue DeConnick will be hosting a Q&A on creating comics from 2:30 - 3:30 p.m. on May 17.
Kelly Sue Deconnick is a comic, stage, and TV writer. She is well-known in the mainstream market as the reinventor of Captain Marvel and for reimagining Wonder Woman’s origin in “Wonder Woman Historia” (Eisner Award winner). DeConnick is also known in the independent scene with her comics “Bitch Planet” and “Pretty Deadly” (both Eisner-nominated).
