I beat Act 3 literally yesterday! And yeah, I think Sherma is central to this game’s themes of faith. Ultimately his sense of faith is a good thing, but it needs to be tempered with action and awareness of the world around him. In the end he does more for the pilgrims than his god ever did.

We get a lot more of Oliver’s band mates in this volume, which is a fun new highlight. Besides Sky they aren’t the deepest characters, but they’re fun in how they act as excitable foils to Oliver.

At the same time, this was the first time I started to get kinda mad at Sara for her indecision, especially because she’s now holding up other potential ships for Joe and Patrick that were clearly supposed to like more. Guess that’s the intended effect though.

Sara has a crush on every boy! We get two major “events” here where the love triangle between Sara, Joe, and Patrick is put in full blast. We get Lulu’s spooky birthday party, and Oliver’s concert. So this was a particularly eventful volume I guess. Feels like things are really moving now.

Now maybe it’s because I praised it last Volume, but I’m starting to notice the dialogue feeling a little weird in places. Not terrible, just in a “this wasn’t originally in English” sort of way. Either there’s responses that don’t quite follow the previous line, or weird lack of contractions.

Also, Oliver (the quiet smart kid who’s clearly Sara’s OTP), has firmly become my favorite character. He wants nothing more than to stop being in a corny romance story and it’s so funny. He’s also a testament to Ochoa’s amazing facial expressions. So much can be said with simply a look between ppl.

Basically a summation that young love is important for the same reasons it’s frivolous, and that you shouldn’t close yourself off just because love at that age is statistically unlikely to last. Its impermanence is precisely what makes it so valuable. That scene’s kinda stuck with me these past days

This comes to a head with two pivotal scenes where Sara and Oliver (my favorite character), get parallel moments of introspection. We get a tearjerker scene of Sara reconnecting to her dead mother through old poems she wrote. And from Oliver’s friend, we get maybe the mission statement if this book,

Unlike a lot of the high school stories this series homages, Kiss Bet is very much aware that life doesn’t pause just because you’re in a love triangle. That fact that Sara is failing math and might not make it into college is a jarring brick wall to this comic’s momentum, but in the best way.

I also really like Sara as a flawed protagonist you want to root for. Flawed because, oh man, she has the worst memory. There’s a lot of dramatic irony in her misremembering or misinterpreting what other people say. Really enjoying this so far and can’t wait for more.

I think this was originally written in Spanish too, so I’m really impressed by how funny the English translation is. I don’t know if the slang is particularly realistic anymore, but it’s successful in portraying the teens as young and dumb.

Sara has three main guys in her life and it’s obvious who the endgame couple is, unless there’s a huge plot twist. The one guy is being a huge jerk, but to be fair you can see from his perspective that he’s well-intentioned, just kind of stupid and impulsive.

This is a long game and if you want to try all the characters you’re quadrupling your playtime, essentially. I’m fine playing through the story four times but not unlocking the true ending four times. As always, I’m left wondering if one story where you jumped between them would have been better.

Both the bosses and the levels of this game are incredibly varied, and there’s a lot of them. 32 stages to roll credits, not counting a secret stage, coliseum challenges, and so much more. The story’s pretty good too. I only wish there was a way for items and unlocks to be shared between files.

You get four playable characters now, the returning 3 all with improvements that make them smoother. I’m still messing around with the newcomer, Neera; I think she’s my least favorite because she lacks reliable vertical movement but I think she’s supposed to be more of a boss buster character.

65. Freedom Planet 2 Played the first one years ago in an LP. I was excited to hear they were making a sequel but it flew under my radar until now. That’s a shame, because this is probably my favorite “Sonic-like” I’ve ever played. And it looks great, upgrading to a 32-bit style from lat game’s 16.

It’s kind of a deconstruction; it lives in its tropes, but it also finds ways to make the obvious story beats feel fresh, like it would for the kids living through them. And it’s fun to read with Ali cause we read it aloud and do funny voices. I may be ace, but I love a good love story.

It takes me back to a time when priorities were different. Sara’s poor scheduling habits make for a great way to whisk the reader between subplots. I like her dynamic with her guy friend Patrick; it’s clear why they make such good friends, but also why they would never work as a couple.

64. The Kiss Bet: Volume 1 Speaking of cute, Ali and I started reading her favorite webcomic together. This is a trade of the first 8 chapters. It’s a dorky high school romance with dumb kids having dumb emotions, drawn in a way that makes it really endearing.

Interesting to notice all the shortcuts of the era: a lot of symmetrical animations to cut the work in half, or parts where the body and head moved as two different animation cells. And I like how they all get scared and hurry away when the sun’s coming up. It’s cute.

I believe at one point, Finn’s arc was planned to end with him leading a full-on Stormtrooper revolt, but it was cut when Disney got scared of the politics. I imagine Phasma was a casualty of that change.
