Metacognition can be taught (Pellegrino et al., 2001). Perkins (1995) identifies 3 types of intelligence: (1) neural, what we are born with; (2) experiential, the knowledge we acquire via immersion; and (3) reflective, combines knowledge, understanding, and strategic ability.

In her book MATH-ish, Jo Boaler explains that "metacognition is about reflecting on your own thinking and taking active control of the learning process." Active leaners know when they know and know when they don't know... and know what to do about it.

Metacognition is the "glue" that bridges word recognition/comprehension and number sense/problem solving. It provides a sense of self-awareness required to move from passive to active comprehension of words and numbers. It can and should be taught at all levels in all content.

Metacognition is grounded in think aloud, monitoring for meaning, generating questions, wondering... teaching students to utilize "thinking about thinking" helps them grow as readers, writers, mathematicians... LEARNERS!

Metacognition has a .69 effect size on student achievement. Students CAN learn to "think about their thinking" AND explicitly teaching students how to think METACOGNITIVELY yields GROWTH. Remember the importance of this important aspect of learning. Think aloud often!
