Suddenly, the ship takes on a face,
and the mud below finds a new neighbor.

And the sea?
It looks peaceful again—on the surface, at least.

Just like on 9/11, I’m taking a moment to reflect on the events of October 7th in Israel. Out of respect for everyone affected, I’ll be stepping away from posting updates today. Back tomorrow. #Peace 🕊️

I Know Your Game Poem: Colorado Flower | Photo: Magda Ehlers #Dachshund | #Poetry | #Poem | #Dogpoetry
I Know Your Game

It’s one of those days,
a quiet weekend morning,
chores to be done,
sunlight drifting, a warming kitchen floor.

While kneeling down to fill the dish,
suddenly something pokes my hip
I know your game and look all around me,
and yes, you poke me once more.

In the corner of my eye,
a stick swings back and forth
I look up—again,
as if I don't know you're there.

I call your name, you bark!
My balance gone, you jump up high,
to wet my chin, a sloppy kiss
My dearest dachshund, Joshua.

#WritingProcess My poems happen organically—during a walk, waking up in the middle of the night, or after an event that stays with me. I record my thoughts immediately or jot them down in my notepad. The shaping and layering often follow hours later, but the core of the concept remains untouched.

The Lomond Exchange 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Poem: Colorado Flower | Photo: Laura Meinhardt #Scotland | #LochLomond | #SkyPoetry | #Poetry
Poem:

The Lomond Exchange

There, uphill, the manicured lawns of Balloch Castle, short and green,
cannot shroud the stubborn, deeper truth:
that in the depths of Loch Lomond,
no tangible mystery unfolds.

But the eyes in your back—if we assume—
may catch a soaring osprey charting course
toward Inchconnachan’s wild shores,
where a different reality leaps out at you.

Brought from Down Under by a high-speed decree,
as the Countess of Arran raced the lake's quiet face,
she gifted these shores a surreal mystery:
phantom wallabies left in the fastest granny's wake.

But times turn, and under the rifle's aim,
they got the blame for gnawing the ancient native oak.
Now how to cull a phantom still hiding so well?
Yes, some pled to move the displaced mob.

Och, where to steer them? No one ever spoke.
So may I suggest a final move and organize the grand exchange:
wallies to the Great Glen's wild, and Nessie to the south,
to yield Loch Lomond a mystery, shaken, not disturbed.

Just a late-night note from Colorado, especially for my readers over in the UK! My latest poem is coming, born from my deep love for Scotland’s Loch Lomond—a love that, as it turns out, isn't entirely unconditional. Keep an eye out for it this week or next. We’ll see. #Scotland #SkyPoetry

The Red Path: Legacy's Road is set in 1758 during the French and Indian War, and the character writing is incredibly layered. @mdanielsmith.bsky.social doesn't do clichés, which I already knew from our earlier conversations here on Bluesky.
The Red Path: Legacy's Road is set in 1758 during the French and Indian War, and the character writing is spectacular. @mdanielsmith.bsky.social doesn't do clichés, which I already knew from our earlier conversations here on Bluesky.

The main lead, a British officer, is caught between two women from completely different worlds, with very different motives. One is a colonist driven by revenge after losing her family; the other is a chieftain's daughter watching her culture come under devastating pressure.

They feel like real, messed-up people making messy choices in a brutal war, not just puppets moving through history. The emotional tension kept me up way later than the actual battle scenes. Highly recommend if you want historical fiction with actual teeth.

Ever noticed the fuzzy center of a young Gerbera Daisy? I learned it isn't mold, but a clever bit of plant engineering. Those tiny hairs help create a protected microclimate around the delicate buds and prevent early self-pollination until insects arrive. And in the background? Sea Lavender!

A Rooftop Cry #Gaza
A Rooftop Cry

White sheets whipped in the stifling heat
dancing for a life that had just slipped away

on a once-peaceful terrace, high above
a child’s cry brought back something like hope —

as surviving neighbors tended to the dead
jet engines thundered back to life—

again...

A distant birch tree blocked the sun, leaving the area in deep shadow. Then, for just a minute, a strong gust of wind allowed a beam of sunlight to break through. It illuminated the beautiful geometry of this Catalpa leaf and cast one tiny spot of light onto a jar in the darkness. © Colorado Flower

Watching the shadow drift past the 9 and the 10... moving quietly toward the 11. On this day, time feels a little heavier. Some moments change the world forever, but we will never forget.
An abstract macro photo of a weathered metal sundial. The numbers 9 and 10 are sharply in focus on the golden-brown textured surface. The background is a soft green and brown blur.

Where my first poems here focused on profoundly difficult themes and the existential weight of life, I want to share something a bit lighter next: a poem about the challenging relationship between ballet and music. I'll be posting that after September 11th, out of respect for that day.

A clean, minimalist layout of an English poem on a white page, set in an elegant serif typeface. The text is left-aligned, leaving ample white space on the right to reflect the vastness of the mountain landscape.
Periods are intentionally omitted to create a fluid cadence. The text reads:

High in the Colorado Sky

Up here, bound by stone and cloud,
your air is growing thin
Far from the crowded noise below,
your sudden shiver strikes within

For millions of years, you carved this stone,
shaping its canyons, tearing ancient rock apart
The mountain surrendered
Is it now my turn?

You already tangled my hair, cleared my mind and stung my skin
Where do you blow, where to, into what?
You know how much time you need with me
But why change a life that will so soon be dust?

Image with a white background and black serif typography. The title is "The Tide Will Turn". The text of the poem reads:

Haunted by the night, the tide rolls in
A seaside sandcastle fading
where mermaids don't go
Lungs inhaling water
as brain cells fire away
Strangled by the sandman
I sleepwalk no more
As tears roll out, the tide will turn

Still getting used to the Bluesky algorithm. It handles images quite aggressively, sometimes tossing dimensions and dynamic range overboard. But I'm slowly learning to navigate what works and what doesn't. Ultimately, the idea prevails.

A Morning Garden By isolating the subject, the lens transformed weathered metal into a frame for a hidden world. The rainwater offers a mirror, where a deep, unedited layer of ivy 'green' awakens within the darkness. © Colorado Flower | #bnw | #conceptualphotography
A high-contrast, black and white close-up photograph of a weathered metal wheelbarrow filled with calm rainwater. The dark water acts as a mirror, capturing a sharp and detailed reflection of a dense ivy hedge with countless leaves. The rim of the wheelbarrow creates a heavy, dark organic frame around the water's surface, and the out-of-focus grass in the background is dimly visible in the soft morning light.

Caught this abstract form while out in the woods. The shapes in the weathered logs look strikingly like a human figure resting in nature. I love the deep textures and natural depth straight out of the camera. © Colorado Flower | #Pareidolia | #SensualNature
A close-up, shallow depth of field shot of a weathered, fallen log in a forest. In the center, a small, broken stick sticks straight up and is sharply in focus. The surrounding massive, twisting tree trunks blur softly into the foreground and background, creating an abstract shape that resembles the silhouette of a human body resting among the trees.

Took a vintage Pentax K5 out for a walk. Straight out of the camera, no edits or sharpening. There is still so much magic in these older sensors—the way it captured the rich, natural colors of this wild Colorado poppy is just beautiful. © Colorado Flower | #PentaxK5 | #StraightOutOfCamera
A close-up shot of a wild poppy blooming on the left side of the frame against a soft, beautifully blurred green background. The delicate petals feature a vibrant color gradient, blending from deep red on the outer edges to a striking purplish-pink towards the center. Its fuzzy green stem stands upright. On the right, the soft outlines of tall grass are out of focus, adding a nice sense of depth to the peaceful nature scene.

An abstract study in amber and shadow. The lens captures a fleeting, painterly moment where the glow of a lamp, diffused through glass, morphs into a fluid, organic swell of liquid gold. © Colorado Flower | #Chiaroscuro | #AbstractArt
A close-up, abstract photograph with a strong chiaroscuro effect. The top of the frame is dominated by a warm amber and golden glow, softly diffused through a layer of glass to create an organic, fluid shape. The lower half of the composition features deep shadows, bordered along the bottom by the dark silhouette of a curved metallic rim. On the right, a small metal bracket or fixture catches a sharp, bright reflection, creating a geometric detail against the soft background light.

Can a silhouette be trapped inside the light? Capturing the raw, organic shape of a glowing candle wick forming an embryonic figure within the flame. Pure, unedited chiaroscuro where the light itself holds the deepest shadow. © Colorado Flower | #Chiaroscuro | #LightAndShadow
A high-contrast macro photograph of a single candle flame burning against a pitch-black background. The bright, teardrop-shaped orange and yellow flame is surrounded by total darkness. Inside the center of the flame, the charred black candle wick has twisted into a highly detailed, organic shape that resembles a human embryo or a delicate mushroom silhouette. The bright light of the fire beautifully illuminates the complex texture of the glowing wick trapped inside it, creating a powerful contrast where the light itself holds the deepest shadow.

Here, I am standing in the dry bed of a ditch, right in front of the culvert. The complete darkness of the tunnel creates a heavy contrast with the sunny daylight, making the delicate green vine pop like a vibrant, natural curtain. © Colorado Flower | #Chiaroscuro | #NaturePhotography
A high-contrast, fine art nature photograph taken from a low angle inside a dry ditch, looking directly into a dark concrete culvert pipe. The pitch-black interior of the circular tunnel forms a heavy geometric frame. In the center, bright, sunny daylight illuminates the outdoor scenery just beyond the pipe. A delicate, wild green vine with small oval leaves hangs gracefully over the top edge of the tunnel opening, its vibrant green colors popping brilliantly against the deep shadows. In the soft-focus background, wild mountain grasses and foliage catch the warm sunlight.

Nature always finds a way. Caught this raw, unedited frame inside an abandoned factory, where the vibrant green outside is slowly pressing against the decay. © Colorado Flower | #Chiaroscuro | #Urbex
A moody, unedited photo from the pitch-black interior of a derelict factory. A grime-streaked grid window filters soft daylight, revealing a flush of lively, bright green foliage pushing against the glass from the outside. The stark contrast between the industrial decay inside and the vibrant nature outside creates a powerful, melancholic atmosphere.
