Today is World Mental Health Day. Our wellbeing and mental health is key to our happiness and those around us. A great way to invest in yourself is to take a walk - it helps us relax, feel more positive and boosts our physical health too.

This is a picture of Heathrow. If you want an illustration of what the airport has done to @colnevalley.bsky.social in 80 years look no further. The rich farmland is long gone. And the erosion of the area continues to this day.

Our plea to the Government is: Get A Grip! It is still not too late for some joined-up thinking and a proper, plan-led approach to development. image © Manor Farm Propco Ltd:‘image produced by developer of how the new data centre could look - with a previously approved data centre in the background’

Communities will increasingly feel the effects of this market-led development frenzy, a modern day gold rush whose implications are not nearly well enough understood.

Colne Valley Regional Park @colnevalley.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
This is no small problem: there are plans for five data centres in #Colnbrook, nearly 20 #Iver and two in #Denham. More will follow – a direct result of the Government’s ‘grey belt’ policy and the designation of data centres as ‘critical national infrastructure’.

• A negative effect on a wide range of wildlife • Ruining views of the landscape from paths, country parks, nature reserves and residential areas. • Causing heat islands significantly increasing the ambient temperature in the area around them

Colne Valley Regional Park @colnevalley.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Any concentration of data centres in a small area has multiple effects including: • Placing an unsustainable load on the water network and aquifers that feed our rivers and domestic taps. • Constant noise • A huge drain on electricity network

Our call for ‘A Corridor For Life’ argues that planned development can contribute towards restoration of the Colne Valley Regional Park to become one of the best green corridors in the UK. Something that residents, government and the whole country can be proud of.

If this area is to host so much development on such a colossal scale, failure to assess cumulative impact, amounts to a shocking disservice to the many millions of people living nearby. www.colnevalleypark.org.uk/lets-create-...

We are pushing government to change course, and have made considerable progress. It is not yet too late - We just have to hope that their promises of help result in protection of the Colne Valley before the tsunami of development proposals obliterates everything.

but this is just the tip of the iceberg. We are not objecting to development per-se, but we strongly object to the fact that there is no consideration of combined impact on communities, and that all of these immense schemes are being proposed on an individual basis without a masterplan of any kind.
