I was mixing up how much they use versus how much they received. I still don't get why a vibe-coded Linux distribution would need more than a framework that runs some of the biggest websites in the world.

Why has Omarchy received so much funding? What is it for? The Rails foundation runs on something like 1.5m/year and Omarchy has received ~$20m? Am I missing something? I honestly don't even understand what the hype is for this.

My experience with Vapor vs Rails so far is that it includes less, but that it might not be a huge problem. The biggest things I feel will be adjustments already are the lack of mailers, Active Storage, generators, and how Leaf works versus erb.

The thing is… I like coding. I don't want to hand over the keys and let go. I'll use an LLM to assist me, sure, but I don't want to treat the code as purely an artifact of me prompting something to do all the work for me.

Making basically an entire small app with API calls, error states, a UI you have to design, and then explaining why you did it the way you did is _not_ a three hour project.

How many users can a $12 server hosting Node and Postgres handle? It looks like about 2500, which could equate to tens of thousands of daily active users. I'd love to see this recreated using different backend frameworks.

How Many Users Can a $12 Server Handle?
How many users can a $12/month server actually handle? I rented the cheapest decent VM I could get: 1 shared vCPU and 2 GB of RAM. Nginx, Node.js and Postgres all run on that one box. Then I hit it with thousands of realistic virtual users (k6) until it broke, and made two small caching changes to see how much farther it could go. If you try to summarize an article in Safari that is more text than fits into the local models' context window, you get some interesting results.

Companies have to figure out their message when interviewing. Multiple times now I've gotten on a call with someone who spends half the time talking up their use of AI and then says not to use AI for their coding assignment. Kind of strange?

For Vapor or a Swift package, I can't really see a downside to using VSCode. For regular app development, having to jump back and forth for SwiftUI previews or whatever seems too annoying to bother.
000
Collin Donnell @collin.social · 29/09/2026
Is anyone using VSCode for Swift? Copilot autocomplete is pretty nice.

The two things my dog seems to like watching are any racing, I assume because of the colors and sounds, and the TV show Naked and Afraid, which I think he finds relatable, being himself naked and afraid.

I thought the way it would work was that if I could see actions in Shortcuts, Siri AI would be able to pick up on those and do things with third-party apps, but it seems pretty hit or miss for me so far.

Also, not shocking to anyone, it turns out that talk was probably mostly bullshit anyway and not representative of even what 37 Signals is doing. www.reddit.com/r/rails/s/thx8...

Because someone has to be responsible. That's the one thing LLMs definitely can't do. Someone has to be responsible for what's put into the world. I also don't get how someone who didn't even understand the language being generated would use the LLM to fix issues very effectively in a lot of cases?
110
Collin Donnell @collin.social · 27/09/2026
English is not a better programming language than Ruby or whatever when used with an LLM, because an LLM's output is non-deterministic. If there isn't a human at some level, you really can't be sure of anything.
110
Collin Donnell @collin.social · 27/09/2026
Maybe someone can explain it to me, but without human code review, or writing the tests, or at least being able to read the language, how could they be sure they're not exposing people's very sensitive email data?
110
Collin Donnell @collin.social · 27/09/2026
If I were a user of HEY, I would be very concerned if the backend of my email service got replaced by a vibe-coded Rust app with no meaningful human code review. I'm also confused how without understanding the code 37 Signals can be sure they're shipping HEY without significant security issues.

I have so many issues with this DHH Rails World talk, and most of them aren't about the concept of AI-assisted coding itself. The historical comparisons, made-up productivity numbers presented as facts, and conclusions built on those. It's all vibes and contradictory horseshit.
020
Collin Donnell @collin.social · 27/09/2026
Oh, these do look neat. I'll have to give them a shot.
010
Collin Donnell @collin.social · 27/09/2026
I guess knowing who DHH is, it makes sense I can't find a transcript of his presentation.
000
Collin Donnell @collin.social · 27/09/2026
He's saying that they're going native because AI lets them maintain native apps across platforms and that Turbo Native had lower fidelity… but I also remember DHH saying users don't care and no one can tell the difference?
020
Collin Donnell @collin.social · 27/09/2026
Wow, that native version of HEY for Mac he's showing off really looks like shit. Maybe it's super early or something, but I don't think I would've put this in a presentation as my example of how AI is helping them improve their fidelity.

Collin Donnell @collin.social · 27/09/2026
Apparently, DHH hasn't written any code in six months and has fixed *everything*. What does that even mean?
100
Collin Donnell @collin.social · 27/09/2026
Watching this DHH Rails World keynote (on 1.5x) because if I'm going to talk shit, I should hear what he actually said. So far, I don't know, man. I'm not seeing a lot of evidence for 1000x programmers. This talk is a lot of throwing out numbers based on vibes and talking about them like facts.

One thing I do really like about Vapor so far is that it's not associated with a known white supremacist.
010
Collin Donnell @collin.social · 27/09/2026
I should start making a list of things I miss from Rails or like in Vapor and write a blog post about that. Really missing generators right now.

Turbo frames or htmx? My impression is that no one outside of Rails really uses any of the Hotwire stuff, so I'm curious to learn what else is out there.

I wonder what the chances are Apple eventually builds a Siri agent into Xcode as a cheaper alternative to Codex/Claude? I don't see why they couldn't. If you ask Siri code questions right now, it works pretty well.
021
Collin Donnell @collin.social · 26/09/2026
One thing I bet is true about Vapor is that being based on SwiftNIO and using Swift concurrency makes it performant as hell. I've never had an issue with performance in Rails, but the way this all appears to work, I bet it's incredibly quick unless you do something ridiculous.
011
Collin Donnell @collin.social · 26/09/2026
On one hand, being able to use Xcode is awesome. On the other hand, having to hit build and run whenever you change anything sucks.
000
Collin Donnell @collin.social · 26/09/2026
So far Vapor seems completely usable coming from Rails. It's different but not that different. Rails is able to lean on Ruby to be more magical, while Vapor uses Swift and thus requires you to spell out what you're doing at every step.
100
Collin Donnell @collin.social · 25/09/2026
Going to give Vapor a serious look. Are there any other Swift on the server frameworks I should be looking at? The closer to a batteries-included Rails-style package the better. I was considering how many of the Rails niceties I could bring over to Vapor pretty easily, and it seems substantial.

Hasn't 37 Signals developing new Rails features for themselves which eventually become public been one of the main things that has driven the framework forward since it was created?

This has already been done numerous times, and reflects the fact that "moderate" wastewater levels no longer predict hospitalizations or deaths. The flu poses a significantly larger threat than COVID and has for the past two winters now.

So what is going to happen with Rails and Ruby if 37 Signals is rewriting their apps in Rust using AI because DHH isn't interested in coding anymore? That doesn't seem great?

I just heard these quotes about firing someone, and I wish more employers believed in and acted this way. "You better know in your bones you did everything you could to prevent this outcome" and "If you don't have documentation, you haven't earned the right to send someone to a food pantry."

Something that sucks about Siri AI is that it's so useful when it works that when it's having normal connection issues you would expect from a beta, you really miss it 😢

I like this interview coding test requirement — "feel free to use AI, but be prepared to explain it and the alternative solutions you might have chosen."

Collin Donnell @collin.social · 23/09/2026
Spending a lot of time playing with Siri AI. I'm hoping part of why it's in beta is to improve its hooks and the quality of indexing. It does well when it has what it's looking for, but seems aggressive at not pulling in more data than it needs and can miss things like finding email messages.

That's interesting. Siri AI doesn't have access to your "Visited Places" from Maps. Seems like it would be useful context?
000
Collin Donnell @collin.social · 22/09/2026
Huh. I got a message that "Siri ended the conversation." I didn't say anything weird or inappropriate to it. Maybe there is a limit to how large a conversation can be? My assumption is it somehow got confused and triggered this, which sucks.
