I prefer simply Silas,” he replied with a wink as he set the jar back on the shelf and turned to Cunningham, clearly less impressed with the man before him, though he still shook his hand. “Ah… and here is the English colonial. No, my pardon, a Briton, of course. A scrap of parchment declared the nations united, did it not? Still, the Empire has a habit of scattering its sons across the globe… all in accordance with Her Majesty’s grand design. Rule Britannia and all that.” He picked up his book and put it on the shelf behind him. “It is good that Inspector Sually here has someone to watch him while he is in London.”

“Something like that,” Halford replied. “I believe the Assistant Commissioner is part of something bigger.”
“This isn’t just about the murder is it?” he asked.
“No,” Halford hesitated.
“Go on then, say it.”
“A group that calls themselves the Ravens.”
McDuffy tickled his stubbled chin, thinking.
“Like the Freemasons?” he said to him. “I wouldn’t exactly call them a cult.”
“Captain,” Halford almost laughed. “I know you’re a Freemason, but this group, they abducted a girl last year and we stopped them Greeson told me to stop investigating them and to ignore what happened to his son…”

Leonard stormed out of and onto the street. The temperature had dropped, and he pulled his collar up high as he quickly crossed the road, stepping out just in front of a passing carriage. Inside sat Fergus Fulton beside the coachman. The horses trotted slowly onwards, eventually turning towards Aldershot Street. A few moments later, the carriage stopped outside number eighty-three. Fulton stepped down and glanced back at the others inside.
"Gimmie a minute," he told them before walking towards the front door.
He knocked loudly and waited patiently before Bea opened it with a smile that quickly disappeared. She tried to close the door, but Fulton wedged his boot in the gap and forced it open. Bea stood in the hallway. Her right eye was badly bruised, and her top lip swollen.
"What do ya want?" she demanded.
"Mister Clover has a special request," he replied.
"Does it involve blackenin' me other eye?" she spat. "Wasn't it enough I told him where Damien went?"
Fulton's eyes drifted up the staircase, where a young girl stood watching from the shadows above.
"I'm just the messenger," he said. "I do what I'm told, same as everybody else."

“For Heaven’s sake,” Miri sighed looking at her.
“Don’t blame me,” Mila snapped back. “Blame Percival Latchford and his wandering paws. He’s lucky it was my left hand or else he’d need more than a wired jaw!”

Lavinia Talbot strolled down the street in the glorious sunshine that had come out in full, she was heading towards 2 Rookery Passage, where the Albion Chronicle’s headquarters were. She couldn’t help herself and gave a penny to nearly every child that held out their hands begging for anything, anyone could spare. She also turned down Damson Street, which had a market, stopping at the hot potato barrow.
“Afternoon Miss,” the vendor said to her. “Lovely day today.”
“It is, I’ll have a baked potato, salt, pepper and knob of butter and if you have some pea soup, that would be perfect,” Lavinia asked him.
“No problem, darling,” he replied. “Two and a half pence.”

“Would the Ravens have a reason to take it?” Halford asked him. “**spoiler**, the man who stole it, was found invertedly crucified.”
Silas stopped walking.
“St. Peter, one of the apostles, was crucified upside down,” he said. “He believed himself unworthy to die in the same manner as Christ. The inverted cross is therefore Petrine in origin. This style would be the opposite of the Ravens… perhaps a symbolic threat directed toward them. The Ravens were always said to influence governments, and we believed those who attempted to resurrect Aisling were merely offshoots, aspiring to surpass their elders.”
“Without sounding rude,” Sually interrupted, “what does any of this have to do with the ruby? Who are these Ravens you speak of?”
Silas gave a faint smile.
“To cut a long story short,” he replied, “a cult hellbent on taking over the world. We, well the detective and the Metropolitan Police force thwarted them nearly three years ago… and it appears they could be back. Hence why Detective Inspector Halford seeks my advice once again, I’m assuming you are still just detective inspector.”

Elliot stood up and spat out blood; he then removed a shank and went for Kit. His slash missed, giving Kit the chance to land a vicious right hook, his golden capped tooth flew out his mouth and scattered across the floor, right to the foot of Ewen Hamish McLeod who happily lifted it and put it straight in his pocket. Elliot tried to crawl away, but Kit grabbed him by the collar and dragged him towards the doorway. Jock trotted with him, looked at Callan, sniffed him once, then lifted a leg. Elliot was half-choking, as his boots scraped against the cobbles outside. The rain hissed in the gaslight, as Detective Inspector Evan McIntyre stood waiting beneath his umbrella, smoke curling from the cigarette between his fingers. Kit dropped Elliot at his boots.

“And I’ll deal with him,” Moores told him. “Hugo is a bitter copper; he failed every written test for promotion. But he did bleed for us, and you know it, showing him, some slack isn’t showing poor leadership. So, what happened and why are you and Gary wet?”
Adewale took a deep breath.
“There was a ship in the Thames, sir, the Orpheus,” Adewale told him. “Everyone aboard was dead except for this one man, he claimed to be the first mate Ned Galloway, we turned our back on him and he killed Lloyd Henry.”

They leapt over the side just as an explosion tore through the belly of the ship, the Orpheus erupted with a blast; wood, flames, and cloth hurled skyward like shrapnel from a cannon. The shockwave slammed into the river, spraying them with boiling fragments and soot. By the time they surfaced, Adewale could see Ned swimming away, he began to follow before seeing Latimer struggling to stay afloat, he had no choice and swam back to the constable and held his head above the water. The vessel was now nothing more than burning driftwood and black smoke.

Ahead stretched a long hallway with brilliant white walls and polished marble flooring that appeared oddly slanted. There were no doors besides the single one at the very end — and even that lacked a visible handle.
As Clay approached, the door slowly opened by itself.
Inside sat a huge office that felt strangely empty. Three desks stood before a massive window while a lone bookcase occupied the far wall.
“Mr Brookes, so good to see you,” a voice announced behind him.
Clay turned to see a smaller side door opening. Three short, balding men emerged, each sporting perfectly manicured beards, tailored suits and thick-rimmed glasses.
“I’d like to return the gesture,” Clay replied cautiously. “You are?”
“Marvin Pennywise,” said the first, extending a hand.
The only real difference between the three seemed to be the colour of their suits. Marvin wore blue.
“I’m Melvin Myers,” said the second man in grey, shaking Clay’s hand next.
“Martin Bates,” added the third, dressed in brown.
The trio sat behind their respective desks.
“Please sit,” Marvin said.
“Yes, sit,” Martin echoed.
Clay lowered himself into the chair opposite them.
“Terrible business about your father.”
“Awful accident.”

McDuffy watched him leave; while coughing again into his hand, he looked up and saw two men he didn’t recognise hanging around on a corner, they caught his eye and immediately walked away. He looked over to Halford as he got into a carriage, before going back into his home and picking out a box on his shelf. Inside was his Adams Revolver, his pistol of choice during the Ashanti war, he took it out a and loaded each chamber slowly, turning the cylinder with his thumb, before easing the hammer down, before putting it in his pocket. He calmly sat down and picked up his newspaper, flipping it open and reading the stories.

At the end Moores stood there, no sign of either Brooks or Jez Poots. He spotted a pool of drying blood and a trail that went towards one of the dilapidated homes. He followed it, entering and seeing Poots, sat on broken stool, his face pale and helmet in his hands.
“You okay, constable?” he asked him knowing he was anything but.
Poots looked up at him, his eyes were glazed over
“Sorry, sir,” he said and stood up, placing his helmet back on.
“As you were,” Moores said to him.

Virgil’s nostrils flared, he felt his integrity was being questioned, but he promised the Home Office, he’d be on his best behaviour.
“I see, well we have found you a place at Scotland Yard, there you will be in the right hands of those that can help you find your Blood of the Ash,” he grumbled. “As we speak, we are heading there now, and we have made plans for you to stay at Mrs Warren’s Lodge and Board.”
Sually nodded and stroked his beard.
“Then I shall relax until we arrive,” he told him and leaned back against the leather seat in the carriage.
Virgil ran his hand through his thinning hair; even though he felt insulted, he had a sense of worry over what he had heard. The three sat in silence for the next half hour as the carriage came to a stop outside 4 Whitehall Place. Sually stepped out of the carriage and looked at the building, with Cunningham joining him.
“Scotland Yard,” Sually smiled. “I expected it to be grander.”

I can only watch the Extended versions of Lord of the Rings these days. The extra scenes just add so much more to an incredible series... Still cry at the end 🤣 And personally thinks Sean Astin deserved an Oscar nomination for Return.

Today I experienced fake reviews against 2 of my books at Amazon. Both reviews by someone I had a disagreement with on X and blocked. They even had the audacity to mention the blocking. I'm fine with disagreement and insults but to do this is low and utterly pathetic. Sorry for venting
