🚨New Publication🚨 I am thrilled this paper found a home at the Journal of Population Econ. I find banning female genital cutting decreases women's education which is accompanied by an increase in early marriage. The schooling decrease dissipates following the implementation of free primary education

Education, marriage, and banning female genital cutting: evidence from Benin - Journal of Population Economics
Using the 2003 ban of female genital cutting in Benin as a natural experiment, I estimate the effect of the ban on women’s human capital accumulation. The ban decreases the likelihood of a woman undergoing genital cutting despite inconsistent enforcement. Banning female genital cutting has a counter-intuitive effect on women’s education. A difference-in-differences estimation indicates that the ban decreases women’s years of education, the probability of completing primary school, and the probability of starting secondary school. I show that the decrease in educational outcomes is accompanied by an increase in marriage and increased spousal match quality. The negative effect on women’s education dissipates following the implementation of free primary education in Benin.

This podcast covers Lakshmi and my recent article in the Journal of Development Economics. This paper examines the long-run economic effects of colonial rule in India. We conclude that targeted public policy can counteract the negative effects of colonialism.

Our results imply that a non-partisan redistricting commission and a transparent process can achieve a politically neutral redrawing of electoral boundaries.

The extent of electoral redistricting does not impact the probability an incumbent will recontest after redistricting, aside from explicit reservations for SC/ST. Redistricting had the same impact on candidates of the ruling and non-ruling parties. 4/4

Within directly ruled areas, colonial land tenure systems caused differences in agricultural productivity and investment through 1987. These outcomes have only partially converged. Convergence is seen in areas where target policy was implemented. 4/6

In 1981, disparities in public goods including schools, health centers, and roads resulted from direct colonial rule in India. By 2011, these disparities have been eliminated following public policy targeted towards equalization of public goods. 2/6
