Riesman: You need to know who the right targets are to get the reaction that you want from the crowd. And the smartest Republican politicians right now, or at least the most successful ones, are the ones who have figured out how to be loved for being hated. And then you’re their hero. This is part of the confusion and chaos of neokayfabe. You can be a heel to your foe and still get pops — cheers from the crowd. In the dark new world of wrestling of the mid- to late ’90s, irreverence and crassness and cruelty was very popular, as long as it was pointed at people you thought were lame or bad or whatever, you know? This reminds me of that episode of TNG where Picard, Guinan Keiko, and Ro get age-reversed into kids just as a bunch of Ferengi take over the Enterprise. There are adults, but none of them have access to the levers of power while at the same time, the stupidest people possible have taken over.
