Credit where it's due. This planner inspired me with a public domain poem I put on my website and with a creative project that I can revisit every year. It's a bit pricey but worth it if needed/you can afford it.

One day we'll have to talk about the fact that in many countries, kleptocrats and despots enter power due to intimidation and violence. In too many Western countries they yell IMMIGRATION and these same vagabonds get to say 'debate me' on the national news. The electorate says 'hmm tell me more'

Ferreting out punctuation errors (which for me includes places where a comma would help readers but is not, strictly speaking, orthographically required) is way more involved than I ever would have imagined. On the plus side, it will be well worth the effort...

I've heard there are two kinds of optimism: a bad kind and a good kind. The bad kind is assuming things will happen as wished for, a kind of blind hope that things will all work out. The good kind is being aware of the positive side of things, having perspective.

These things should have been banned. Shame on us for allowing them to become commercial product to begin with. Shame on them for disregarding the obvious impact this kind of technology has on so many people, especially women and other groups, but all of us, too.

Some pages from a scratch notebook I copy definitions down in. Am inconsistent about it, but sometimes color code tones (idea borrowed from the Pleco dictionary app which color codes tones). #languagelearning #汉字

On the one hand I really should stop spending time reading the news... In some ways, getting on Bluesky and other social media should fill the 'void.' On the other hand, I feel like it could be a trap where I end up just getting my news from social media and I think that'd be problematic...

I kinda get why people hate on fussy philosophical stuff, but on the other hand don't you think we live in a time where it'd be especially helpful to have rigorous conversations about things like personhood, meaning in life, the point of art, the point of pure mathematics, & operationalizing ethics?

Study and learning (from research to gradeschool and preschool) is one of the most important investments our society can make in its future contentment, safety, and prosperity. More funding also means more voices and approaches, so this is the kind of issue that everyone should come together on.

Conspiracy theory: the backlack against bringing ice coffee to interviews is to avoid competition to provide free ice coffee for potential hires.

西肯居士 (Adam) @coldscholarstudio.org · 26/09/2026
I kept seeing posts about "iced coffee" being brought to an interview and looked up the context. This issue points to the bigger problem: so much of our judgment of people's mental states is based off of inconclusive outer behavior. Approached this way, issues arise at multiple layers.

If calculated using traditional calendar methods, Mid-autumn Festival 中秋节, Chuseok 추석 秋夕 etc. were actually on Thursday, here in the USA. Of course, we traditionally celebrate based off of Beijing time etc., but kinda neat to think about celebrating it as a society in the USA, too.

Thanks to things like YouTube, it's easier than ever to get into things like Classical Music (if you want) or any other traditiona of music, really. For music to listen to while reading or studying, or it's hard to beat a baroque concerto grosso imho.

Noticed some cats live in the neighborhood at my new apartment. Finally bought some cat treats and left a few out in a bowl overnight. They were gone this morning! Hoping it was the cats and not some kinda pests or something. 🤣

Thankfully, I never really had a poetry class in the traditional sense of being told how to interpret famous old poems. I do regret though, that they never taught us a poetry class where we just wrote whatever poems we wanted (or read whatever poems we wanted). Poetry is for everyone...

“Preludes” by Madison Cawein (1865–1914), one of Kentucky’s most famous poets. I digitized this poem and put it on my website as part of a public domain anthology compilation project, the *Bards of the Bluegrass: An Anthology of Classic Kentucky Poets.* coldscholarstudio.org/texts/prelud...

Not only does the world seem less diabolical when one's understanding is grounded in science, learning science also invites us to consider the frontiers of our knowledge, which also tend to make conspiracy theories a lot less convincing.

Zhāng Liáng 张良 (d. 186 BCE) was a Daoist military advisor to the founder of the Hàn 汉 dynasty (est. 202 BCE, fell 220 CE, with an interregnum in the middle). He was from a noble family of a state that was destroyed during the Qín 秦 unification of China under an imperial system. #history #China

As I keep saying, that movement/admin just shouts 'self-hate'. Turning our government against our civil society (and vice-versa when not in power) and attempting to turn our center of civil administration into a military encampment. These people don't even understand their own history and culture.

Happy Founders Day! (Sept. 21 is the birthday of Kwame Nkrumah, which is now a national holiday in Ghana. Nkrumah helped lead Ghana to independence from British colonial rule. Although he was an imperfect politician at times, he helped organize and lead an important movement in human history.

Trying to use social media to develop an online presence is weird. Apologies if I sometimes am a bit acerbic, strange, or somehow annoying. My experiences with Bluesky have been sooo much more positive than with Twitter. Grateful for everyone here for being thoughtful, diverse, inclusive, kind &c.

With 45 days until the midterms, I urge you all to: 1) Help get out the vote. 2) Protect our electoral machinery from interference. 3) Not succumb to complacency, defeatism, or cynicism. We are the only ones who can end this nightmare. We are the leaders we’ve been waiting for.

This is why I keep saying we need to actually study the Classics. If we don't, people who barely understand them will use them on others who don't understand them either. We can still appreciate and learn from these things without undermining our morals. english.elpais.com/culture/2026...

We absolutely need to teach children about the shortcomings and dangers of reliance on AI. At the same time, we should be wary about demonstrating those shortcomings in a way that will no longer apply in months/years from now. (Misteaching is worse than not teaching imho).
