It was inevitable, wasn't it🙄 Of course the Telegraph would run with something like this👇 So let's remove some of the rose-tinted spectacles and also look at some of that data comparing 1976 with modern heat waves Because the 1976 nostalgia porn is wearing a bit thin at this stage 🧵1/23
Telegraph headiline:

"Heatwave hysterics wouldn't have lasted a day in 1976", overlaid with a bold “MONK DEBUNKED” stamp.

When it rains, it now rains more. For those experiencing the flooding in south-west England, it is worth remembering that rainfall in winter has increased by about 25% overall. And, the rainfall has also become more intense: when it rains, it now rains more, increasing the risk of flooding.

Since it's coming up again in the Discourse: GPS (GNSS) is a passive system and does not itself actually track anything. The satellites just shout out their own position & time. Your device just listens to that, works out its position, and may store or transmit that data through a phone connection.

🌊🧪@bgc-argo.bsky.social Float of the Month. WMO 7900823 deployed nearly 80 south in the Ross Sea has done 2 years under ice. Here's the data plot (all data freely available @soccomproject.bsky.social). No bloom this year! Too much ice melt, no deep mixing, and no iron to feed plankton - IMO.
8 panels of data showing temperature, salinity (with mixed layer depth overlaid), chlorophyll, optical backscatter (bbp), oxygen, nitrate, pH and computed dissolved inorganic carbon over 2 years and down to 400 m.
