“Cyclists want to be treated like cars but …” Hold on buddy! The vast majority of cyclists do not want to be “treated like cars”. They want infrastructure and design that’s bike-friendly, and which recognizes how cyclists differ from both cars and pedestrians.

Pre-Race Jitters
I'm heading out to Kyrgyzstan today, and I'm kind of nervous about it. I am hopefully smarter than I was in 2023, and I think I have addressed the issues that prevented me from finishing back then.  My Coros Dura is lightyears ahead of my previous computers in terms of pointing me where I want to go. I am bringing more meds than last time to avoid getting sick.

WATCH: “You’ve been lied to about roads for 60 years.” And you’re still being lied to today. Building more and wider roads WON’T reduce traffic congestion or support the economy. But they WILL cost us billions, increase pollution, emissions, noise and road deaths, and trap us in longer commutes.

I keep hearing from drivists about pedestrians jumping out between parked cars. Calgary Parking does not patrol and ticket people for parking in crosswalks, they only respond to complaints. They also refuse to ticket in unmarked crosswalks. Seems like an easy safety win is available.

Full Suspension Bikes and SRMR Finish Rates
Conventional wisdom says that the added complexity of full suspension (or some say any suspension) will reduce their reliability to the point of making them a poor choice for ultra-endurance racing. There are several components to this, and, like so much conventional wisdom, data may contradict the accepted story.

I know AI sucks, but then sometimes I think it might have some useful analysis. I asked Jetpack for AI feedback on an article and it provided it in Portuguese. While the feedback was relevant, and clearly based on my article, the article was in English, and I make no claims of Portuguese fluency.

Bike (In)Decision For SRMR
What Kind of bike do you recommend for these events? There are a number of bike options that would all be solid choices for these races. There are few extremely technical sections, but you will benefit from wider tyres, flat bars and mountain bike geometry on the rougher sections and on descents. When it gets very tough, you probably won’t be able to ride, regardless of the bike you choose.

Finding Myself
My recent racing history has a few unfinished courses in it, Rather than lament getting lost, I am actively looking to improve the things that make it more likely to finish. Navigation has been a big challenge for me. I was skilled enough with a map and compass, but the modern world has placed all sorts of handy devices in our hands that in theory allow us to follow a route with ease.
