Kyiv. Late evening. I was choosing the art I wanted to show you from the art fair. And suddenly, explosions shook the air. Missiles. Art a bit later, I think.

You usually hear about the frontline city of Sumy because of russian attacks. Today I learnt that Sumy State University and the University of Liverpool have launched a joint research project on technologies that could make cities and infrastructure more resilient. Amazing!

Every week I plan (at least, that’s something I can plan) which book to buy from my long wishlist. Besides the books that fell on me accidentally. Yes, I actually read them. Today, in Kyiv with my new book. I encourage everyone to read. If I can, so can you.

Late night in Kyiv. Another drone threat has just ended. I cannot sleep. Ordered some books. The publisher whose warehouse was hit the other day suggested buying the books that survived. They have traces of fire or water damage. They called the initiative ‘The Fire Didn’t Finish Reading’.

It was perhaps one of the loudest explosions I’ve heard nearby in a long time. And now I’m reading that a drone hit a residential building. Close or not, I just hope everyone is alive. Yes, it’s Kyiv.

Sunday morning in Kyiv. Emergency power outages again after russian strikes. The window is open, bringing in the sound of generators. Covering myself in a blanket of autumn sun and sipping a warcoffee, I’m going to write a letter about what it was like to live in Kyiv this week.

Do you also care about what future generations will think of us? Of what we did or didn’t do? Our actions now shape the lives they’ll have. We are stuck on what’s best for us. And it’s our biggest failure.

I’ve never seen anything like that. A chestnut tree is blooming in Kyiv. In October. No, it’s not a massive ‘trend’. Other trees are just like trees in autumn. Yellow, red, bald, tiredly green.

Again and again russia destroys Ukrainian books. After each strike on a book warehouse, I film how Kyiv bookstores react. Today, my favourite one. In the video: some books by Knygolove, whose warehouse was hit yesterday. The bookstore asks people to support affected publishers by buying a book.

russians kill children, women and men, the young and those whose hair has turned silver. russians destroy homes where someone had breakfast yesterday. They burn warehouses full of books. putin is evil. But this evil has hands that kill, destroy and burn.

A few minutes in Kyiv. Drones and a power outage not on the schedule. Someone is stuck in the elevator. My upstairs neighbour is going to look after her mum (97) in Sumy, closer to the frontline. A woman on the street asks where the nearest shelter is. I see her fear and take her to a safe place.

Late morning in Kyiv after the overnight attack. Soon, I’m going to my workout. As usual on Wednesdays. Perhaps you’ve read about the casualties and damage. Not only in Kyiv. I hope you have. I don’t open the windows. The city is covered in smoke.

Kyiv. I am in my favorite bookstore. That means I crossed the Dnipro River. Trains of my metro line run across it again with some restrictions. Relief. I write more about how Kyiv and I live in the letters. Sunday Letter from Kyiv. Sounds good.

Kyiv. Power outages are back in our lives. Today, we got the outage schedule. Keeping a detailed war diary helps. I checked it to see when the outages began last year. On the night of October 9-10, russians attacked our energy system. We had no power for over 15 hours. What will this year bring?

This is the dome of the Boim Chapel (1609-1615) in Lviv. It was a burial chapel for the wealthy Boim family. At today’s lecture, I saw this dome again. Next time I’m in Lviv, I’ll go inside the chapel and show you. As promised earlier. Gorgeous.

Something unusual is happening in Kyiv. Calm. Since last night. It’s 4 pm. This calm feels like a spider’s web. Delicate. Fragile. May the spider keep doing its job.

Kyiv. Early Sunday evening. I went to have warcoffee at my favourite place. Drones? Frequent uninvited ‘guests’ during the day. One of the bridges was hit earlier. People are out, doing the same as I do: living their lives.

These days there’s so much talk of a nightmare waiting for Kyiv: we’ll freeze with no water or electricity, and strikes on bridges connecting the two banks will cause a logistical collapse… I don’t say times are or will be easy. But I stay in Kyiv. This panic benefits russia.

While putin is desperately fighting with bridges in Kyiv, we find solutions. I’m in an absolutely beautiful Telegram group, where people can ask for a lift from one bank of the city to another or offer one. I love reading messages there.

Late Friday morning in Kyiv. No, I won’t go to the right bank of the city as I planned. Why? The bridge I use was hit again at night (for the third time). And traffic on some other bridges across the Dnipro River was restricted. So, traffic jams are inevitable. I'll wait. I'll wait.

This is what I was afraid of. russian drones struck near the support structure of the Pivdennyi Bridge in Kyiv. It connects the two banks of Kyiv across the Dnipro and it’s the one I use. Metro and other public transport across the bridge have been stopped while engineers inspect it.

Good news. Engineers found no critical damage to the bridge. Public transport across it is returning to normal. Metro trains are not crossing the bridge. Engineers are still checking the metro structures.
