the latter just seems like basic journalism stuff, and yet

as opposed to "ben benjaminson, who in our reporting (see here, here, and here) has been shown to be a milkshake duck, was interviewed"

so often i see an interview with some fella who's just lying and the interviewer's publication has plenty of documentation of that, but there's not even links to the other articles. just printing some jackass's opinion without warning, and then the buzz is "benjamin benjaminson was interviewed"

"Journalists interviewing objectionable people and getting pilloried from all sides for the act of interviewing them, even though it's part of the basic ethics of reporting." True; it'd be nice if they gave context tho, like "so and so is a convicted sex pest and vocally racist against yellow labs"

Talarico is going to do and say bad things but before you comment, make sure you're framing your criticism with your answer to the question would it be better for Talarico to win or for that dirtbag Ken fucking Paxton to win

Fair, I was talking about a different thing.

Perhaps this is true, I haven't noticed that change the questions I'm asked, though. Those often come from a perspective that assumes the shorthand reflects the reality, rather than the reality being multilayered; the shorthand indicating intentional mimicry programmed in to increase engagement etc.

I have faith this is true, but I'm increasingly unsure whether people *do* grasp double meanings without cues. Most of the folks I know who aren't professionally obligated to think about this stuff are tired of it, and maintaining awareness of multiple layers is hard.

"hark! 'tis morn, the Frugalhorn doth call!" ...no, you must mean the Flugelhorn "nay, der Frugalhorn is similar to trumpet, yet with smaller conical bore"

super painful that this is true sometimes or lots of times but! so it goes, keep passing the open windows, etc

in my own work yes, i find attributing human behaviors to the tools when they don't exhibit it, even as shorthand, unless *specifically within a group of peers who have very similar context*, leads to misunderstandings, mistakes, waste

For thousands of years the ability to speak and especially to write fluently was semi-consciously used as a (very problematic!) proxy for intelligence. About four years ago a few companies disproved by counterexample any linkage between fluency and intelligence. A lot of us are still catching up.

i'm prone to laziness myself, no shade

Shaun of the 🥖 @cognitivebios.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
attributing the ability to choose to an LLM and its associated tooling (or a group of em) is laziness, sorry
200
Shaun of the 🥖 @cognitivebios.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
dunno if that's the case really if you've used the bots to accomplish things for any length of time you've observed an LLM emitting text that's clearly inaccurate, sometimes going through multiple passes of contradictory "observations" of its own previous output, all inaccurate

Shaun of the 🥖 @cognitivebios.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
even if they're programmed to emit words that mimic human patterns, they're not actually doing what we do apophenia is a bitch we evolved to do this
010
Shaun of the 🥖 @cognitivebios.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
this is probably wrong and the people arguing that using terms which clearly invoke human emotion, thought processes, etc genuinely don't understand that there's something quite different going on with LLMs and the tooling around them

where it really appears that using imprecise language leads the person towards imprecise, inaccurate thinking

i have seen multiple examples of people using language that discusses the bots in anthropomorphic terms or advocating for it

the responses to this post are kind of a lot i deleted something earlier about how, counter to what i learned in linguistics class, it seems like language leads thought sometimes, but here goes

your concern about the legality of this venture is conveniently addressed by our corporate vision statement and executive charter, as expressed by our company-issued "this person is complying with all applicable laws and regulations" wallet card and neckerchief

my pregame explanation was "Austin's had a hard time on the road and Portland has done well at home, it's looking likely Portland will win this one" almost forty seconds before the announcers said the same thing so I got to look very Dadly in that moment

sorry to any pals who are Timbers fans but it was pretty awesome to have been asked by the kiddo "who's going to score first and who's gonna win", have a whole conversation about predictions vs results, and then get to see Austin FC win 1-2 that Svatok goal was a fun watch

trying to maintain the peace found in not chasing after the thoughts directly resulting from reading the words of stubbornly intolerant people who have influence and instead focusing on questions like "what is the effect of other people's belief or tolerance for these deranged rants"

Without this basis, when you say, “This is the mountain,” or “This is my friend,” or “This is the moon,” the mountain will not be the mountain, my friend will not be my friend, and the moon will not be the moon itself.

Maybe so. But it is not always so. If times change and we lose Tassajara and move to another mountain, the way we have here cannot be the same way we will have there.

"Words like ‘genocide’ and ‘apartheid,’ applied to a corporate transaction, aren’t just wrong — they’re a bridge too far, and they cheapen the very real suffering those words are meant to describe." lol, sure, IBM probably tried to make the same point but the facts stand
