For me the potential of Spring starts in February. Not quite done with Winter rest, but new stirrings beckon. Time to prepare the soul to steward a new growth of creation, envision, acquire seeds, prune and plant trees, plan for new animals, and as always, pray

I’ve heard a couple of explanations of this, that RFK is selling out and/or this is a dominance ritual imposed by Trump, but just hear me out: eating the burger is a sacrifice he must make to the seed oil gods in order to clear the way for the Good Works

The critiques also beg the question, growth of what? GDP as an indicator of societal health is so discredited at this point it's hard to take seriously. You can have growth, but only if you have a holistic indicator that accounts for natural capital, pollution, inequality, etc

She's coming back tonight, and we decided to do something with the upper level as well. Perennials from around our place, including comfrey, strawberry, oregano, lemon balm, fern, rhubarb, mint, and chives. Most are aggressive expanders, so well let them compete for space

Wife is taking a week long work trip out of the country, and the 5-year old wanted to make a butterfly garden for when she gets back. And so we did The 2nd level bed will be another project for another day

Finished first round of planting basically everything I wanted to get in. Still have plenty of bed space left to tinker with. It's always something to think about the massive amount of ecological intelligence and potential in that soil, ready to shape the surrounding substrate according to its logic

In the garden we inevitably get volunteer plants in the beds from previous years. My view is, if they want to grow there, they get to (seen here: potato and mustard green)

It is our view that if humans are going to survive the future they will need to move towards bioregional patterns of organization. This is a good primer on bioregionalism for those who are interested: earth.org/bioregionalism

Tfw you didn't plant much blue corn except for what was left over from a couple years ago because you couldn't find last year's harvest but then your wife found it and you decide to go all in on your blue corn empire.

Nice to clear out a garden bed of mulch and weeds for planting and to find dozens of critters going about their day. And of course big critters (that are visible) means plenty more helpful microbiology that is not visible

Going to start developing a landrace variety of squash this year. Got a bunch of varieties ready to interplant, including heirloom and hybrid, saved pumpkin seeds, and some random transplants that I got from the farmers market. Will determine the number of seeds of each and then mix them up randomly

Succession planting cucumbers. Will keep adding mounds each week for the next 3 weeks. Munchers now, picklers later. Will also add cardboard around the plants to prevent blight and strings across the trellises for them to climb

Slowly but surely reclaiming this perennial bed from weeds. Planting both transplants and seeds, including lovage, lavender, sunchokes, various flowers, comfrey, rhubarb, etc. Already have sage and asparagus. Mulching heavily, tired of messing around

We evolved nails for a reason. Having to clip your nails due to lack of *hand* digging is environmental mismatch...Real talk though, hand tools are the greatest invention of humankind
