I put together 4 starter packs for anyone who wants a more useful, less doom-driven way to follow German politics, democracy, civil rights and context. If that sounds helpful, the packs are in the replies as well as a few long-form videos on YouTube I found helpful for perspective and outlook.

Article 1 of Germany's Basic Law, as published in the first Federal Law Gazette on 23 May 1949. It begins: "Human dignity shall be inviolable."

Scanned page from the 1949 German Basic Law. Heading: Grundrechte.

Northern German Pear, Green Bean & Bacon Stew Early autumn cooking, even if the afternoons haven’t got the memo yet. Pears, green beans, potatoes and smoked bacon, simmered with thyme and bay leaf. A little sweet, salty and smoky. #GermanFood #GermanCooking #HomeCooking

The fourth of 12 children, Dolly Parton was the first in her family to finish high school, the first to become famous. “I never had a doubt I would make it,” she reasons, “because refusing to think I couldn’t make it is the reason I could.” On her childhood, loving life, and being herself:

A little thread about Dolly Parton, Richard Dean Anderson, and Make a Wish. This was the late 80s. My neighbour's young nephew was dying and had three wishes: 1. Meet Dolly Parton 2. Meet Macgyver (aka Richard Dean Anderson) 3. Go to Disney World

It‘s a bit odd isn’t it? We didn’t know her but at the same we knew her. I’m in Germany, we almost exclusively know her via her musical legacy unless you’re terminally online and connected to the USA via friends online as I am. I share your feeling. It’s a sad day.

I hope her legacy lives on, not only through her music, but through everything she did to give children a path forward, lift them up, and open a world of possibilities to them. The world feels a little dimmer without her in it.

I am often jaded, and I can be cynical. But Dolly has always been such a shining star - someone who seemed so fundamentally good that my heart breaks a little knowing she is gone.

This is the way. I’m happy for you and your spouse getting to share this! I’m eagerly waiting for news about the new Divinity game Larian is cooking up, and I’m expecting writing at least on the level of my beloved Baldur’s Gate 3. Truly a game for the ages.

Ooh, I had no idea. This must have been major fire then. I’m glad we have some rain currently which should also clean up the air

That’s good to hear 😊 it was mostly a strong smell here, like burning plastic. They just sent out the all good notifications.

We had multiple forest fires in the towns next over and surrounding us, and while it was extinguished, the local inversion weather causes a lot of the pollution and even the smell to just get stuck here too. It’s not extreme but noticeable.

Screenshot of the IQAir website showing air quality in Dietzenbach at 20:00 on 16 August. The US AQI is 58, rated “Moderate,” with PM2.5 as the main pollutant at 13.2 µg/m³. Weather conditions show 30°C, wind at 6 km/h, and 35% humidity. The data is provided by a satellite-derived model, with the hourly forecast remaining around AQI 57–58 through midnight.

They’ll usually rob you blind for emergencies. But, I’m just glad they got the help they needed in that moment 😊

That’s… more than impressive! Did they charge you an arm and a leg for that?

Im glad you’re still having a great time 😊 I’d be stressed out but I’m too much of a homebody for this. Luxembourg is definitely a lovely place to visit!

That sounds like quite the adventure! But are you doing okay on your trip aside from that?

Dirk @coffeemeoften.bsky.social · 10/08/2026
