I'm defending my dissertation next Wednesday, EST. I'll record it on Zoom, but also if folks are interested in the Zoom link, please DM me 🙂 Thank you to everyone who supported me through this journey. I currently have no plans post-graduation, but no matter what I'm excited for these next steps!
Dissertation defense advertisement for Codey Mathis. Dissertation is titled "Assessing the impact of floral resources and vertical stratification on insect behavior and biases of common trapping methodologies for insect communities". Defense is scheduled for Wednesday, January 28th, from 10-11am Eastern time at Penn State and on Zoom. Top left image is Codey holding a bunch of ropes that have gotten tangled and botom right image is Codey sitting in the middle of one of her research plots holding her late beagle Remus.

New intro who dis? Hullo my name is Codey, I'm interested in forest biodiversity, management, and conservation. I'm finishing up my Doctorate in Entomology at Penn State in the spring and will be looking for employment in this wild timeline. I love pokemon, hiking, and my dogs. AMA

#EntSoc25 Are you neurodivergent (ND), care about someone who is ND, and/or employ ND folks? If so, we invite you to our workshop "Diverg-Ent" on Tuesday from 2-6p! We have EntSoc member panelists of many neurotypes and want to hear from you, and hope to make Entomology a safe science for diversity!
A flier for a workshop at the Entomological Society of America's annual conference in Portland, Oregon. The workshop is titled 'Diverg-Ent: Challenges, Successes, and Strategies of Neurodiverse Entomologists" and is in Room C125-126 of the Oregon Convention Center on Tuesday, November 11th from 2-6pm PST. The middle of the flier has a logo made by Francisco Bassó Medel and is a brain that is filled with bugs of various colors and types with a butterfly resting on top.

I was really motivated to get some extra work done tonight and the universe has rewarded me for my efforts. #Pipunculidae
A zoomed in photo of a point mounted big headed fly in the family Pipunculidae. When I saw big headed I mean her head is as big as her thorax. I would bet her body weight is like 90% eyes.

During my routine checks of our insect zoo today, I spent some quality time with Coconut our curly-haired tarantula, and saw a recently molted angel. 😇
A hand holding a 12 year old curly-haired tarantula , spider taking up majority of the palm of the hand. Spider is missing a patch of fuzz on her opisthosoma because she itches it for some reason. Two cockroaches, one the normal black/dark brown and the other recently molted and not yet sclerotized, so it is pure white.

Some of the cool things I've been seeing from my forest trapping project! First, I lost my absolute mind after I realize I'd caught one of my favorite wasp genera, Baeus! Second, haven't fully identified this beetle yet but look at those hooks on the elytra! Can't believe I get paid to do this 🥰
