Red Dwarf: Titan by @andrewmarshall.bsky.social and the late and ever so great Rob Grant, read by the amazing Chris Barrie. Pretty easy review, because Red Dwarf was my youthful intro to absurdism. Torrents of OTT ludicrous insults, capturing what it means to be a smeghead. #booksky #audiobooksky

The cover for Red Dwarf Titan by Rob Grant and Andrew Marshall, read by Chris Barrie, featuring a reddened photo of Saturn, with a warping starfield behind in. Lettering is centralised over Saturn.

I bought 'The Backwards Knight' by @backwardsknight.com and read it in 3 days. Wrote a review. If you can't be bov'd to go over to medium, the TLDR is that it's a dark fantasy story about a sword guy who isn't all bad. Read it if you liked The Witcher! medium.com/rogueframe/t... #booksky #witcher

The cover image for the backwards knight. A dreamlike windswept and sad face in blue, with hand drawn text underneath.

I read Uprooted by @naominovik.bsky.social. Based around a trad polish folk tale, the sheer amount of death in this book, offset by the way the magic of life curls through everything, was fascinating. A powerful yet grounded main character invested strongly in her world. Highly recommend. #booksky

The cover image for uprooted by Naomi Novik, featuring a woodcut image of a thorny rose outgrowing a tower, above a wild forest.

After its nomination for the @ursulakleguin.com prize and the public rec from @aptshadow.bsky.social I listened to Slow Gods by Claire North, read by Peter Kelly. Sci philosophy and theology, exploring what it means to be impossibly powerful yet totally alone. Bit more conscious of the dark tonight.

The cover art for Slow Gods by Claire North, a red on black theme of concentric circles backdropped by planets, with a stylised view of a space craft soaring upwards in the centre. The space craft is a piece of golden iconography with softened edges. A red event horizon, looking a little like blood, spreads horizontally across the image.

I read 'All things great are simple'. A transformative work based on the small loveable character 'Volly' from the #temeraire series by Naomi Novik. The fanfic, a writing prompt response, was written by user Lorata. I absolutely love Volly, and this captured his affable charm beautifully. #booksky

I read the free short story 'Draki Twins' by Eileen Mueller and @ponderbooks.com and it was great. A really punchy action packed palate cleanser after the lengthy series' I've been enjoying. Teenage me would have loved the opportunity to read magic, shapeshifting, explosions and jeeps! #booksky

The cover for Draki Twins, depicting a red and a blue dragon flying with flames on the edge of the image.

Hello #booksky, I have just read the collection of short Temeraire related stories by Naomi Novik 'Golden Age and other stories'. A short and truly wonderful collection of complementary and transformative works, followed up by some charming drabbles. A particular favourite for me? Volly Gets a Cow!

The artwork for 'Volly Gets a Cow's by Naomi Novik, by Cary Shien, depicting a small dragon chasing a scared cow. A larger dragon presides in the background, looking a little shocked.

@ponderbooks.com I went ahead and downloaded your free book, which I'm gonna give a read after I finish the @naominovik.bsky.social short temeraire story collection. I read half yesterday and will probs finish it after work tonight then I'll load yours up on my ereader 😁 #booksky

The cover of Draki Twins by AJ Ponder, depicting a blue and red dragon flying around the walls of a fortress. There is evidence of conflict via a conflagration on the left hand side of the image.

Children of Memory, the third in the Children of Time series by @aptshadow.bsky.social made for an extremely enjoyable conclusion. Each tackles a unique concept on the theme of enhanced evolution, focusing on a different creature. Two such characters in particular are total charmers 🧐😎. Also, they..

The cover image for 'Children of Memory' by Adrian Tchaikovsky, depicting a large, multi engined starship against the backdrop of space. A powerful whitish-blue light surrounds the ship, as it dives upwards towards the atmosphere of a large yellow coloured planet. The sun is peaking out from the curvature of the planet.

This summer I listened to Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir after watching the excellent movie. Some things were a little different, but not excessively so. I see why the changes were made for the movie. One of the few instances where the book and the film are equally as good. Fist my bump.

I've just finished reading the wonderful Temeraire series by @naominovik.bsky.social after my partner Sam listened through them last year. We're a dragon-positive household, and this fascinating series has made my lazy breakfasty mornings with the cat an absolute joy. Now to read about Volly's cow ❤️

The cover for 'Temeraire' by Naomi Novik, featuring a sketched and stylised flowy image of a dragon over text of the title and author's name. The stylisation, incorporating skulls, scrolls and flowing leaves, suggests an endless circle of aeration and power. The dragon's tail forms the crossbar of the 'T' in 'Temeraire'.

For the first time in my life, this year, I read the Earthsea books by @ursulakleguin.com. I'd heard about them and heard about them all throughout my childhood but they never quite crossed my path. They are such a unique way to tell a ranging story, but it's the second book, the tombs of Atuan...

The cover art for the books of earthsea, depicting a large red dragon and a small person on a boat below them, dwarfed in scale.

Welp, after hearing about it in a few places, and a strong recommendation from @kirkhamilton.com, I listened to the first audiobook in the Dungeon Crawler Carl series by @mattdinniman.bsky.social, narrated by Jeff Hays. Then the 2nd, then all the rest! It has EVERYTHING! What an adventure!

The title card from audible for 'a parade of horribles'. It depicts Carl, Donut and some other characters flying forward across a finish line with an explosion behind them.

I watched #Arcane season 2 on Netflix. Although my first impressions were kinda muted, a few days on and it won't get out of my head. I was surprised by the parts that stayed with me, notably Ambessa's story, which I'd love to have seen a full backstory on. Either way, great show. I liked it.

I've just finished reading 'Gotta get Theroux this' by @louistheroux.bsky.social One of the great things about being English is that Theroux is always there in the background of your life, providing context to the weirdness of all that you see, in ways that make absurd sense. Excellent #book

I've just finished reading 'Why I'm No Longer Talking To White People About Race' by Reni Eddo-Lodge. This was such a moving book, and also incredibly important, providing so much context to the hidden history of the people of our country. A must read.

Legends and Lattes by Travis Baldree was a light-hearted buffet of cosy comfort concerning the unfolding of an Orc Barbarian Mercenary's coffee shop dream. I thoroughly enjoyed following Viv through her journey into entrepreneurship, and the motley band of friends she made along the way!
