What "The Wage Standard," a new book by @arindube.bsky.social, does best is highlight the great discretion we have to increase wages and the wisdom of bold steps to reduce inequality, reviewer @cobblog.bsky.social writes.

The Affordability Crisis Is a Wage Crisis
A new book reframes the affordability debate: the problem isn’t just prices alone, but persistently low wages.

We don’t know how many people have been killed or injured by ICE — and the government doesn’t have to tell us. While ICE’s scope and power expand, accountability is nowhere to be seen. From Jacob Fuller: trib.al/HhqyFNi

As Jacob Fuller notes, there is no compulsory database for law enforcement use-of-force incidents, and we mainly rely on news reporting for any comprehensive account. For 30 years Congress has failed to require use-of-force statistics, & the only thing that exists is voluntary.

It’s insane because I don’t want to diminish the suffering of others but twice as many people were killed by cows last year (22) than on the MTA (11) out of 1.5 billion individual rides

As someone who actively works in politics and has done so for a minute, I think the public generally lacks the knowledge that most politicians and especially guys like Gavin are total morons. Like in regard to national politics or identifying ideological trends they are sub your average voter

Finally finished my piece for Substack. It's an essay on the rise in addiction and homelessness related crackdowns, and how an attempt to better understand these issues may have had unintended consequences for how we approach treating it. Check it out!

The War on Visible Poverty, and Addiction as Metaphor
Contemporary crackdowns on America's poorest may be informed by our better understanding of addiction- but that may be making them worse.

Anyone who has ever been described as a “wonk” needs to be launched into space. For people who self-describe themselves as that we cannot risk failure, and need to ship them immediately to the closest volcano. It’s the only way

There’s remarkably little data on the efficacy of political outreach texts, and no evidence of them discouraging voters. Regarding fundraising texts, they are a pretty ok source of revenue on the aggregate, and don’t seem to impact voter opinions. Most ppl are not that fickle on the issues

Yum! brands the owner of Taco Bell was one of the only stocks that rallied today based on expectations of increased sales revenue for this quarter. Screw everything else that happened in the market today, this is the biggest recession indicator.

-risk getting name dropped by Trump/Musk to an audience of extremely aggressive people who literally tried to kill them all at once 4 years ago at the direction of Trump who has since freed those people. At risk of humanizing these clowns, in some sense they are literally being held at gunpoint.

And his win. Criticism of Kamala Harris and the campaign (which by the way i participated in and can attest to it being a shitshow) is not an endorsement of Trump, nor is pointing out that Biden who was obviously unwell and not fit to serve 4 more years.

I’m sorry this is silly, the Times editorial team put a full page out saying Trump is a threat to democracy, and routinely occupied the editorial page on the run up to the election with articles on how dangerous he was to democracy. It is a ridiculous to suggest that the times is responsible for him

I love going on Reels cause half the time it’s just a video of someone getting murdered followed by a Peter Griffin account explaining Scientology. Im not sure how they’re gonna include that in the upcoming The Social Network sequel but it’s gotta be somewhere.

Now I know everyone is very scared about everything going on right now, but I’ve been speaking to a group of democratic consultants and they’ve assured me that if we simply toss a few hundred trans people and student protesters into a volcano, we might have a chance at squeaking out the midterms

Rereading Sontag for a piece I’m writing, and came across this incredible section. Denying access to ideas is as much about group/identity formation as it is an attempt to punish others. A lot of parallels here in the harm reduction/food assistance space.

Least favorite journalistic tic is when we get 100 articles saying, "Trump is threatening to break things- but some Democrats think some things should be broken sometimes." Like yeah, ideology exists.

It's a real catastrophe for the Western left that so many people let themselves be convinced the Maidan was a CIA ruse. people were melting police tanks to the street with Molotov catapults built into their Ice Fortress. you call yourself an anarchist and don't find that hot as fuck?

For all the (possibly) good Twitter did, the total brain poison that it was for writers and journalists was undeniably awful. Talking with a few writer friends of mine who are still on it it’s amazing to see how they guage ideas based on how the X-right will react to it

I feel like this is based on a broader misconception of what C-suite business ppl actually do. Historically a lot of the current executive crop come from or were mentored by Jack-Welsch era 80s types who believed in broad cuts to boost stock prices at the expense of actual business

like I have had full conversations with high up officials in the Harris campaign where they seriously were asking aloud whether or not young people are influenced by social media campaigns. and when I told them there's research on this, they looked at me like I shot their dog.

my primary concern with a lot of political discourse is that people have this idea that commentators, campaign officials, and even political staffers have any knowledge of political science, philosophy, or any real background at all. Literally none of them do. No one knows anything.
