🚨New Paper! In the study championed by Janina Pykäri, they quantified biotic carbon stocks across trophic levels in the shallow littoral zone. For example, they found that most carbon in the studied soft-sediment habitats was bound in vegetation and infauna. 👉Read more doi.org/10.1016/j.ma...

New publication!🌥️ Maija Peltola et al. have measured new particle formation and aerosol properties at the CoastClim coastal atmospheric observatory. The fascinating results showed e.g. new particle formation at the coast occurred roughly as often as in a boreal forest. 👉 doi.org/10.5194/acp-...

🚨 New Publication!! 🚨 The study by @cmgustafsson.bsky.social and collaborators from UWA found that the main biodiversity mechanism driving seagrass biomass stock is through dominance and co-existing species that show similarity in their functional traits.

Coastal zones are identified as important natural carbon sinks globally, but in brackish environments like the Baltic Sea, knowledge of coastal carbon sequestration is limited. This new study shows that shallow and partly enclosed Baltic bays are significant sinks for carbon and nutrients.

New publication! Gammal et al. sampled benthic macrofauna, solute fluxes and environmental variables at 3 shallow habitats throughout one year. Results show that the strength of biodiversity-function relationships really depends on which species are present in which habitat and during which season.

Our researchers are exploring patterns in greenhouse gas emissions along the NZ coastline! Preliminary results agree with the findings from the Baltic Sea that stressed and degraded coastal ecosystems become net emitters of GHG:s, and highlights the importance of proper management of coastal areas.
