My GEOMAR group feels at home in Gran Canaria, first time for me. In a few days, we set up a mesocosm experiment on OAE (a type of mCDR). My role: impact on phytoplankton, base of the food web. I believe environmental impact will be a key factor in whether OAE can be deployed. Excited to be here

I’m stunned by how many incidents of harassment and intimidation towards women around me I have witnessed or heard about lately. I know it’s nothing new and has been happening for far too long, with little to no meaningful change. But it feels like it has been happening more and more often lately.

My prediction is that we will never have enough CO₂ removal (CDR), so overshoot is not a thing. We will hit 1.5°C global warming by 2030, and every tonne of CO₂ we emit will make the world warmer. Where we stop is entirely up to us, but there’s no dialing down the temperature after that.

The TV in the ship’s galley is hooked up to the underway instrument in the lab so we can see the results in real time as we eat. That’s @cmoras.bsky.social looking stressed that we’re not going to find the tracer.
Inside the cramped but cozy galley of a ship, six men are gathered around a dining area, their attention collectively fixed on a large television screen mounted on the wall that mirrors a lab computer’s interface. The screen features a graph showing the concentration of a chemical in the water. one man sits directly in front of the monitor while others watch from the long dining table and the adjacent kitchenette. The room features wooden cabinetry, overhead industrial lighting, and kitchen appliances that surround the scientists and crew.

This film ends with a warning about global warming and sea level rise. But in the 1950s, they didn’t know why it was happening, which must’ve been really scary. We now know it’s due to our burning of fossil fuels. The fact that we don’t stop it is very stupid.
This framed vintage movie poster for the 1953 documentary *The Sea Around Us* features a dramatic, hand-painted underwater scene where a shirtless diver in white trunks and a diving mask fends off a large, coiled moray eel with a spear. The background is a deep turquoise ocean filled with small schools of fish and coral formations, while the bottom right of the poster is dominated by a large white title block featuring the film’s name in bold red and black sans-serif typography. To the left of the title, the text "A Thrilling World of Wonders You've Never Seen Before!" is printed in white, and at the bottom center, a bright yellow graphic of a book and a gold Oscar statuette proudly declare the film an "Academy Award Winner" for Best Documentary Feature.

Today's thought: academia has had centuries to figure out that women exist and contribute to science, their presence in leadership is still somehow rare, and the men in the room are often the last to notice (probably because they don't invite women into the room in the first place)

Marine CO₂ removal R&D has focused on efficacy, treating ecosystem harm as a gating criterion to overcome. Hence, these efforts have made only minimal measurements of environmental impacts and then claimed that no harm was observed. It’s the attitude that if you don't measure it, it doesn't exist 🌊
Mesocosm experiment enclosures floating on calm seawater near Bergen, Norway (2022). Three numbered cylindrical marine mesocosms (visible numbers: 5, 6, 7) are arranged in a row on a glassy fjord surface. Each unit consists of orange vertical support poles holding a transparent plastic dome lid above a large semi-transparent cylindrical enclosure bag that extends below the waterline to isolate a column of seawater. The structures are reflected clearly in the still blue water. A forested coastline and scattered buildings are visible in the background under a clear blue sky. Photo credit: Dr. Michael Sswat.
