My fave improbable chart detail: It topped Radio Songs/Hot 100 Airplay 9wks—between “Fly” & “My Heart Will Go On”! Also it peaked @No6 pop cuz EMI intentionally pressed only a few thousand copies, making it Hot 100–eligible but guaranteeing more full-CD sales. That’s why the album went 3x platinum.

I’m getting in late here, but @augetoffmygold.bsky.social nails it in this all-encompassing explainer of the “Choosin Texas” phenomenon. He covers all the angles I’ve been prattling on about in articles+podcasts since August & more besides. The analogy to Teddy Swims 2yrs ago is especially astute.

Co-signed—esp the 15wks part. What also made it hard to latch onto was that title. He might as well have gone w/“It Is What It Is”—the 21st century’s all-purpose nothing phrase. Months after writing on “As It Was” I struggled to recall what it was called—I even forgot it once in a podcast interview.

Thanks for the kind words about my article. As I often say, the charts don’t mean everything, but they don’t mean nothing. And they have never been more transparent. P.S. “Choosin Texas” is both a legitimately popular & a good song.

Just because they can: my latest #HitParadePod on @slate.com connects the late great Dolly Parton + currently dominant Ella Langley. How’d Dolly stay country while crossing pop—and what did she bequeath Ella’s generation, who are “Choosin’ Texas” while topping the pops? Talk about a cup of ambition.

Older chart rules held back many of Dolly Parton’s hits on the pop charts, but the streaming era is rectifying that for modern country stars.

So then read the article or listen to the Cannonball podcast. I explain all that. Short version: if you live in a world where country music never crosses your path, you might not be encountering the song. But that doesn’t much matter in the streaming era of the charts. It has a devoted audience.

Pretty sure I heard “Sorry About Your P” on a jokey radio morning show or something at the time. Looks like it wasn’t just a CD deluxe bonus—it was a B-side to the “Walkin on the Sun” single, which of course was only issued overseas. So in the US we narrowly escaped that thing becoming a B-side hit.

I loved joining Wesley Morris to talk about Ella Langley’s #Hot100 record-setter “Choosin’ Texas,” on his @nytimes.com podcast #Cannonball. We get into the merits of the song…why some audiences haven't heard it…why country music is having a moment + what our current hits say about the national mood.

Kudos for doing a much better job than I explaining #DreamNotFound. At least your kid gave you a bit of context. Y’know my half-decades of pop theory? To me the early ’20s are the TikTok/Pandemic Vibes period—“The Box,” “Mood,” “Drivers License,” “As It Was”—& “Heat Waves” is the ultimate such hit.

Hey @tombreihan.bsky.social, happy mutual birthday to my fellow chart-chronicler. Here's a thematically appropriate banger—if Billboard had launched the Modern Rock chart just 6 months sooner in '88, I'll bet you would've gotten to write about it for #AlternativeNumberOnes. Have a great day! 🎂

Honestly, in the annals of alt-rock’s bro-ification I don’t see “Fly” as staggeringly better than “Push.” I’d move the former down a couple of points & the latter up a couple. “Fly” is funny & genial, but McGrath’s voice is still his voice; Rob Thomas, however tortured, sings rings around him.

UPDATE: I called it—“Jolene” reenters@ No16, “I Will Always Love You” debuts@ No27. (First #Hot100 appearance ever for the latter!) I’m esp.proud I called which returning hit would be biggest—“IWALY” is more apropos to the moment but I just knew…folks love “Jolene.” www.billboard.com/music/chart-...

Makes you wonder—if streaming existed in the 20th c. would all the catchy Disney patter songs have hit No1? “Cinderelly, Cinderelly”? “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious”? “Gaston”? Even in the ’50s I don’t think Disney joints got radio play so you would’ve needed streaming to reveal their hugeness.

A “fun” read from @totcharts.bsky.social+a must-read for bellow chart junkies—even as it will not restore your faith in either the music biz or artist fandoms. I learned a few things—I missed that 6ix9ine leaked the #Hot100 formula & forgot Dua’s “Levitating” (likely) got robbed from a rightful No1.

P.S. Another thing MB20 have in common w/the other mid-’90s corporate-alt bands: a CD cover clearly designed in a major label art dept. using clip art/stock photography. Others: • Collective Soul, ‘Hints Allegations…’ • Sponge, ‘Rotting Piñata’ • ‘Third Eye Blind’ • arguably Radiohead, ‘Pablo Honey’

A good read; you come at your distaste honestly. I taxonomize MB20 as a bridge between what I call Friends Rock—peak Hootie/Toad…the post-REM stuff Monica Geller macked on—& VH1-core: pseudo-alt for soccer moms/little league dads. @augetoffmygold.bsky.social would call it Minivan Rock—also correct.

Doesn't take a crystal ball to see: my #WhyIsThisSongNo1? series on @slate.com takes another look at “Choosin’ Texas” now that it’s about to tie an all-time #Hot100 record. Already #SongOfTheSummer, it’s pulling other country songs into the pop Top5. Country’s having a moment—but also…it’s the data.

And I say…it’s all right. My latest #HitParadePod —now live on @slate.com—chronicles the hit the Beatles left on the table: “Here Comes the Sun,” George’s Abbey Road deep cut. Thx for the shout-out. I clicked thru to your “American Pie” piece to confirm you wrote it pre-’21 when no one could’ve predicted its song-length record would be toppled. I prefer original-flavor“ATW”—length+’12 vocal—cuz I like its precocious melodrama. But I loved reading your Dad’s Version take.

A fun project, done with love. I would have made “Be My Baby” the top pick, but I get why y’all went the way you did. Attaching 2 small correx—swap in “Cherish” on Madonna’s list of No2s (“Isla” peaked@No4) & the 4 Seasons had a 5th No1 in the ’70s that you may have heard! (at any no. of weddings…)

As undeniable as “Proud Mary” is—and it’s the correct, canonical CCR choice for a list like this—I have long regarded “Green River” as not only my favorite CCR but one of my G.O.A.T. singles, period. That groove is untouchable.

I found ‘30’ a bit more adventurous than her priors—Adele can push herself if she wants. Right there w/you on “Easy on Me” but surprised you’re so 👎🏼 on “Oh My God”—the syncopation/hook really work on me (there’s even an echo of the Diwali riddim). Hopefully boredom inspires something cool next time.

Oh whoops! Couldn’t see the bottom of the image on my phone. U2? Too arena-rock, right? And yet they were grandfathered in at alt-rock stations right thru the ’90s & beyond. Tears for Fears? Another margin call, but to me they qualify more than U2.

Chris Molanphy @cmolanphy.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
I assume none of the Talking Heads hits count cuz they predate ’80s alt-rock, but I would probably include them. “Burning Down the House” even barely makes your ’83 cutoff.

Would either of the hits by Information Society count? I realize they’re Americans posing as Brits, but both singles made the early Modern Rock chart and surely got their share of KROQ et al. airplay.

I’m convinced “SCL’s” ongoing relevance is partially karaoke-related—its verbosity makes it a varsity-level ’90s bop. I’ve tackled it a few times & it rewards deep knowledge of the recording esp. the multiple bridges—you gotta kick it up a notch on “when the plane came in, she said she was crashin…”

Pedantry: if BVA was partially inspired by “I Touch Myself” the earliest he could’ve written “The Freshmen” is 1991. I thought you were winding up to accuse the Verve Pipe of helping to popularize the mini-genre I call VH1 grunge, but I suppose you’ll get to that when we arrive at MB20’s “Push.”
