A 2,300-year-old silver container in the shape of a scallop-shell decorated with an octopus 🐙 It may once have held cosmetics. From Paternò, Sicily. Altes Museum, Berlin 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows a silver shell-shaped container with an eight-armed octopus in relief at the centre of the lid. The arms of the octopus curl outwards across the ridges of the shell’s surface. This ornate shell container has a hinged lid and may once have been a cosmetic container . It is displayed on a clear stand in a museum case. Dimensions: 13.3 × 13.2 × 3 cm. It is part of the Silver Treasure from Paternò, Sicily, a hoard discovered in 1909, consisting of tableware and toiletries. Dated 4th-3rd century BC.

Sometime around 30,000 years before the current era, somewhere in the midst of the land that would become Germany, a human sat in a cave and sculpted a horse. Later, we would call it the Vogelherd horse: the earliest horse sculpture ever found. Original post

The extraordinary 3,000 year-old ‘Berlin Gold Hat’! One of four known cone-shaped golden ‘hats’ from ancient Europe. Sheet gold decorated with bands of solar and lunar motifs, which may represent calendars according to latest research. Neues Museum, Berlin 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows a very tall, slender, conical gold object known as the Berlin Gold Hat, displayed against a dark museum background. At the top end, the tall slender cone narrows to a pointy tip.
At the bottom it widens into a rounded base with a broad flat brim. It is made of very thin hammered sheet gold, the entire surface of which is embossed with horizontal bands of decoration. Repeated motifs of concentric circles, disks, ovals, and other symbols, are thought to represent the sun and moon. According to latest research this may represent solar and lunar calendars. It is dated to the late Bronze Age, c. 1000-800 BC. It is 74 cm tall and weighs 480 gms. On display at Neues Museum, Berlin. It is one of only four known golden ‘hats’ from ancient Europe. Three from Germany and one from France.

A little bear carved from amber some 6,000+ years ago! 🐻❤️ A hole through the torso suggests it was worn or suspended from a cord. National Museum in Szczecin, Poland 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows a small figurine of a bear carved and polished out of a piece of amber between 9600 and 4100 BC. The amber is a deep translucent orange in colour which is emphasised by the display lighting against a dark background which makes the amber glow. The bear's head is carved to show ears, mouth, nostrils and eyes. A hole runs through the bear's torso, suggesting it was threaded onto a cord. Dimensions:
Length 10.2 cm, Height 4.2cm

I took this photo today at the Landesmuseum Halle in Germany where the bear is currently on loan from Poland for the excellent Shamaness exhibition.

The figurine was discovered in Stupsk during peat mining in 1887. According to the National Museum in Szczecin "Shortly after its discovery, the figure underwent conservation work to restore its original appearance as it was covered with a layer of dull patina from the exposure to the minerals contained in the peat. Already at that time, at the end of the 19th century, it was assumed the restoration had gone too far. The figure was stripped entirely of patina, the anatomical features of the animal were emphasised, the eyes and nostrils were sharply drawn, and the amber was carefully polished".

In 2013, a competition was organised by the Education Department of the National Museum in Szczecin, for children to choose a name for the bear. The winning name was 'Stupcio', an affectionate diminutive meaning 'little guy from Stupsk'.

Spectacular Roman octopus mosaic from the floor of the women’s changing room at the Central Baths in ancient Herculaneum. 📷 by me #MosaicMonday #Archaeology
My photo shows a monochrome Roman floor mosaic depicting an octopus. The octopus is composed of small black tesserae (tiles) and has eight writhing arms with suckers and narrow curling tips. It is set against a white tesserae background. This octopus detail comes from a monochrome marine mosaic featuring Triton with a cherub and various sea creatures which include the octopus, dolphins and a cuttlefish. Wonderful ancient artistry! About 40,000 years ago, this small, graceful horse figurine was carved from mammoth ivory! Imagine the #IceAge artist at work, sitting by the warmth of a fire, creating what is the world’s oldest known figure of a horse! 📷 by me #FindsFriday #Archaeology
My photo shows a profile view of a small horse figurine with head to the left, displayed against a dark background. Sculpted from mammoth ivory, the surface is a mottled greyish-earthy-brown colour with a shiny patina. It was once likely off-white in colour. The head is gracefully lowered with a long and elegant curving neck, and a convex curved back. The four legs are incomplete. The top of the tail remains. The eyes, nostrils, and mouth are carved as indents. It measures a mere 2.5 cm in height, 4.8 cm width, and 0.7 cm depth.

The 'Vogelherd Horse' was excavated in 1931, together with a number of other ivory animal figurines from the Vogelherd Cave, Swabian Jura, Germany. It is the oldest known sculpture of a horse. On display at the Museum of Ancient Cultures, at Hohentübingen Castle, Tübingen, Germany.

Toot toot! 🐭 🎺 🎉 I’m delighted to reach the milestone of 15,000 followers! Thank you for joining me! Great to see so many of you interested in #Archaeology! Here’s a tiny Roman bronze mouse playing a trumpet! Perhaps too loudly as he’s covering his ear with a paw! 1st-2nd century AD #Archaeology
My photo shows a tiny bronze figurine of a mouse playing a Roman tuba, a long, straight bronze trumpet with a flared bell, used by the Roman military (though not exclusively). The mouse is seen in profile, standing facing left, head tilted upwards playing the trumpet which is held in the mouse’s right paw - right paw not seen in photo. It covers its left ear with its left paw, perhaps the sound of the trumpet is too loud! The figurine is 3.81 centimetres tall. The bronze mouse appears dark grey in colour. Displayed on a thin vertical metal stand on a black plinth against a beige surface and dark brown backdrop.

Small bronze mice statuettes were a very popular motif in Roman times, often attached to oil lamps and lampstands, a reference to the problem of mice gnawing at wicks and drinking lamp oil, a nuisance documented in various ancient texts. They’re often comically shown undertaking human activities out of proportion to their small size, which invoked the Hellenistic and Roman literary and artistic traditions of an ‘inverted world’, as discussed in an article by Philip Kiernan ‘The Bronze Mice of Apollo Smintheus’.
