AVATAR: SEVEN HAVENS is off to a very promising start. Switching to the 90s anime dystopian fantasy inspired setting was a huge swing that sets up compelling new directions. The cast of characters are immediately relatable and Jeremy Zuckerman’s synth-y score is an instant winner.

#WildHorseNine is another Martin McDonagh two-hander special. Hard to call it his best film right off the bat, but I can’t deny John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell make a compelling case for the most watchable on screen duo of the year. Ben Davis’s cinematography is no slouch either.

I suspect many people who see The Social Reckoning won’t know the story, and ultimately, I think Sorkin’s doing a public service by telling this story at all. It’s worth seeing for that reason alone. He just needed a strong directing partner for this material. Fincher was sorely missed.

Caleb Masters @cmasterstalk.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
#THESOCIALRECKONING is a solid enough corporate espionage thriller. The cast is pretty good, Mikey Madison most notably. Sorkin’s snappy prose remains engaging & incisive, but the ending leans too heavily into his optimism. Hard to feel earned when the story is still being written.

It’s been said multiple times all over the internet, but THE SOCIAL NETWORK really did have its fingers on the pulse of where the world was headed. Sixteen years later, it feels prophetic. Fincher and Sorkin didn’t just capture Facebook. They captured petty, status-obsessed tech disruptor culture.

First time experience—I almost got run over by a gang of twelvish year olds on E-bikes on today’s run. I thought South Park was being silly, but once again—satire is no longer as absurd as reality. Signed - mid-life man with no kids shaking fist at the sky

Here are my off the cuff thoughts on #Veritymovie. Thanks to the cast, I enjoyed my time, but I actually thought the whole film needed to be trashier. Get more reviews like this: thecinematropolis.com

#Digger is a bizarre role for Tom “Mr. Movies” Cruise. The cinematography & production design are impressive, and it has a few magic tricks up its sleeve. But when the takeaway is “art is futile,” what’s the point? Read more: www.thecinematropolis.com/digger-revie... @seattlecritics.bsky.social

#Verity: Granted, I’ve not seen a Colleen Hoover adaptation until now, but this was just passable. Michael Showalter doesn’t take the inherently pulpy material nearly far enough. Luckily the cast leans into the silliness for some laughable line deliveries. A surefire “made for Prime Video” classic.

#Digger: I'm genuinely torn. On one hand, it's technically impressive and striking in IMAX. Tom Cruise delivers his biggest performance in decades. I said "wow" a couple of times. On the other, Iñárritu's deeply felt cynicism is obnoxiously self-aware and painfully smug. I'm left feeling hollow.

#ForgottenIsland This is maximalist animated filmmaking that wears its millennial heart on every sleeve it can find. Its sweet heartfelt message about friendship is taken to the next level by exotic music video-style editing and the most visually vibrant artistic swings I’ve seen this year. See it!

My video review for #Primetime Robert Pattinson's next-level performance alone justifies the time and ticket price, and Lance Oppenheim's stylish direction is especially haunting. It's a bummer the script doesn't dig a little deeper. For more: www.thecinematropolis.com/primetime-is...

#Primetime: Robert Pattinson is mesmerizing in this darkly funny, haunting roast of “gotcha” reality TV. Director Lance Oppenheim’s debut narrative feature is a striking showcase for his talents, but it feels like the script pulls punches. It never digs quite deep enough to say anything revelatory.

Zach Cregger’s RESIDENT EVIL is a wild 95-minute joyride packed with playful jump scares and surprising comedy. It’s a fan crowdpleaser that never feels too derivative. All killer, no filler. Just a man on a mission with plenty of grotesque, video game-inspired zombie chaos along the way.

COYOTE VS ACME is a delightfully clever use of the Looney Tunes. Come for the slapstick, stay for the riffing on corporate law. There’s playful commentary about “legal” vs “ethical.” Very on brand for 2026. It’s no wonder Zaslav tried to kill it. Stick it to the man. See it in the theater.

There's a genuinely great Spider-Man movie inside SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY. Its emotional thesis about grief, isolation, and growing into adulthood is one of the MCU's most resonant. It's just buried beneath the plotting to justify unnecessary guest appearances. Giacchino's score is lowkey the MVP.

What’s most impressive about The Odyssey is not the incredible technical feats of filmmaking. It’s how the film recontextualizes the myth to say something profound about the current moment in human history. Check out our in depth podcast discussion: www.thecinematropolis.com/the-odyssey-...

#TheOdyssey: Chris Nolan delivers the definitive epic of the 2020s—real ships at sea, giants towering above men, ghastly armies back for a final word. It feels real, imaginative, and instantly iconic. A surprisingly haunting and heartfelt cinematic masterclass about the cost of defying the gods.

#EvilDeadBurn: Absolutely maniacal degrees of gore & violence. Similarly to Final Destination: Bloodlines, it expands the franchise by creatively leaning into lore. It plays with fan expectations with a wink right before gouging its own eyes out. It’s a fun time for the die hard horror hounds.

#TheBear S2 “Fishes” is on my Mt. Rushmore of best TV episodes of the last 20 years. I’ve never seen a story capture the insanity of an emotionally charged holiday better. It’s crazy stressful, raw, and emotionally visceral. Family trauma runs deep, and holidays brings it all to the surface.

Caleb Masters @cmasterstalk.bsky.social · 30/06/2026
#TheBear series finale was exactly what it needed to be. Emotional. Imperfect. Expressing the experience of collaborating with the very best people under less than ideal circumstances and immense pressure. It builds deep ties, trust, and a familial connection that transcends the workplace.

#ReadyorNot2 trades the original’s novelty for bigger, bolder, and bloodier violence, bolstered by a sillier supporting cast. This eat-the-rich satire spins further into something more savage, raging even louder against the gears of capitalism. It’s still a fun time. Mr. Le Bail will be satisfied.

After 30 years and seven entries, the inevitable gears of franchise filmmaking finally caught up to the Scream series. #Scream7 is the first outright dud of the saga. It’s the very thing the best movies spent decades satirizing—half-baked cash grabs without strong ideas. What a bummer.
