Comma-shaped Jade clevelandart.org/art/1917.1057
Jade has historically been associated with power in Korea, and was used to make objects and decorations for the aristocracy. During the Old Shilla Period, comma-shaped jades such as these were the most essential decorative element of the gold crowns and ornaments used for the burials of kings, queens, and other aristocrats. After the state of Shilla united the Korean Peninsula in 668, the use of jade in prestigious mortuary objects declined, brought on by the arrival of Buddhism and the ebbing of shamanism.

Mirror with the Image of Avalokitesvara clevelandart.org/art/1918.531
Mirrors, along with swords and jade, were among the most important symbols of power. It is thought that mirrors held power through their ability to catch and reflect light. This rare trapezoid-shaped example is engraved with an image of the bodhisattva Kwaneum, and was used as a part of Buddhist rituals.

Snowscape with Figures clevelandart.org/art/1987.187
This scroll is a rare surviving example of early Joseon-period painting. The names of the painter, Kim Si, the patron, the date, and title of the painting are all inscribed. Kim Si was a member of the literati-high ranking or aristocratic men who eschewed court life to focus on literary and artistic pursuits. This decision was often made in response to the strife of politics at court, and Kim Si was no exception. His father, Kim Anro (1481-1537), was at one time the highest ranking court official in Korea, but was executed after years of political struggles. Kim Si pulled away from the court and spent his life doing calligraphy, painting, and reading. This image of a solitary scholar in his studio surrounded by trees and snow-covered mountains is reflective of the literati desire for a life devoted to art and poetry. In the painting, a scholar watches a visitor approaching by boat, while travelers depart from his studio on foot by the back gate.

Winter Landscape clevelandart.org/art/1986.45
This wintry vista is a vivid example of idealistic monumental painting: the strong contrasts of ink washes and contouring brush lines; the bold outlining of rock shapes and tree trunks; and the many short, twisting brushstrokes which build up the surfaces of the rocks. Much of the painting’s appeal can be attributed to the dynamic lines and contrasting tonal patterns that lead the viewer’s eye from the lower foreground toward the cold mountain peaks in the distance. In the corner is the artist’s seal, "Yeoseol," which means snow-like.

Hollyhock-shaped Cup clevelandart.org/art/1969.85
This very rare porcelain cup is called a hollyhock cup because its rim resembles a hollyhock blossom. This type of cup was produced only in the state-owned kiln for a limited time from the late 1400s to mid-1500s. Like sunflowers, hollyhocks also open their blooms toward the sun, signifying loyalty to the king. According to Korean royal archives, hollyhock cups were used during state banquets when the king offered wine to court officials. Also, a hollyhock-shaped cup was used in tea ceremonies to welcome visiting Chinese diplomats. In comparison to ceramic works of the late Joseon period that favor natural and rustic sensibilities seen in this gallery, this hollyhock cup illustrates the precision and perfection that were core aesthetic values of early Joseon period art.

Scroll Box with Dragon and Phoenix Design clevelandart.org/art/1990.15
This large rectangular box was designed for keeping a scroll or an important document. The mother-of-pearl inlaid lacquer rendering of a dragon and phoenix combines texture, color, and shape to produce a dazzling effect. The large and prominent designs of the Joseon-period inlaid lacquer, like on this box, replaced the fine detail and mosaic-like patterns popular in the Goryeo period (918-1392).

Box with Painted Ox Horn clevelandart.org/art/1920.37
This box is nicely decorated with the technique of ox-horn painting (<em>hwagak</em>). The ox horn was cut, soaked in water, boiled, and then pressed into thin flat sheets. The sheets were painted with popular motifs of Korean paintings, such as tigers under the pine trees, ducks in a lotus pond, and deer. The painted surfaces were attached to wooden boxes, and finally, the box was coated with varnish for protection. The translucent quality of the ox horn offers both a lively surface for the painting, and a contrast to the color of the wood.

Seated Amitābha clevelandart.org/art/1994.94
This magnificent Buddha, called Amitābha (literally, “infinite light”) is seated on a lotus pedestal with both palms facing up over crossed legs, suggesting that it is in a deep meditation. Originally, this scroll was acquired by the museum as a Korean work, but has now been reattributed as Ming period Chinese. <br><br>One of the major reasons for this reattribution is that contemporaneous Korean works mostly depict this deity giving a sermon, surrounded by a large retinue of Buddhist guardians and celestial beings, rather than meditating. Stylistic elements that emphasize ornamentation, such as a chain of flying flames on its body halo and a multitiered throne festooned with colorful floral and geometric patterns also confirm the current reattribution.

Bowl with Stamped Decoration clevelandart.org/art/1921.678
To create the linear patterns visible on this bowl the potter quickly carved the design into the dark clay body. He then applied white clay slip with a brush over this general area. After the slip settled into the linear grooves, he wiped the surface excess away (although he "missed" an area near the parallel horizontal neck bands), leaving a whitish line. A greenish celadon glaze was then applied over the bowl. Punch'ong decorative techniques were a response to medieval Korean society's need for greater numbers of attractive, inexpensive housewares.

Alms Bowl with Celestial Design clevelandart.org/art/1986.94
Although created in the common form of a begging bowl, this was a ritual object, engraved with a rare Goryeo-period landscape. The sun, moon, and Big Dipper are carved in the sky, while a tiny pavilion and a tall pagoda can be seen on top of the mountains.
