Jar with Scroll Design clevelandart.org/art/1963.505
This vessel was used for burying a placenta, a custom practiced by aristocratic families in Korea in the belief that it would bring happiness to the child. This jar was placed inside another wide-mouthed jar then buried inside an outer stone box. This rare jar has a bluish-green tone commonly seen in Buncheong ware. Pots were coated with a white slip, and then decorative designs were added using a combination of inlaid and stamped techniques. This style emerged in the 1400s, and then disappeared after the 1500s due to the popularity of white porcelains.

Tathagata Buddha clevelandart.org/art/1918.542
Korean Buddhist painting was much admired by Westerners at the beginning the 20th century, and then fell out of sight until the 1970s. As the painting hung continuously for many years in the museum's Asian art galleries, its condition began to deteriorate and cracks developed across the surface. This was caused by constant exposure and the relatively thick backing papers, which affected the painting's structure during the rolling and unrolling of the scroll over the decades. Long diagonal tears also appeared precisely in the area of the figure's chest and face, disfiguring it. Treatment of this scroll involved the laborious task of removing all the original paper supports and then substituting more pliable backing papers in two layers. Surface losses were consolidated, and then in-painted judiciously, or left untouched. The blue textile mounting is the original fabric, cleaned and conserved.

Standing Avalokitesvara clevelandart.org/art/1998.80
This small gilt-bronze statue represents the Bodhisattva of Compassion (관음보살 in Korean), an enlightened being who helps devotees on their path. It features two prominent attributes: a water sprinkler (kundika in Sanskrit) and a miniature image of Buddha Amitābha in its jeweled crown. Its sweet and gentle smile accentuates this celestial being’s immeasurable compassion for human suffering.

Created during the Unified Silla period, a high point of the spread of Buddhist teachings, this kind of miniature gilt-bronze statue was often used as a portable object of devotion by traveling Buddhist monks.

Jar with Four Lugs clevelandart.org/art/1993.43
This storage jar comes from the Paekche kilns, located west of the Kaya kilns that also produced early stonewares. The body is relatively thick and less paddled than Kaya pieces of the same period. The mat gray surface of ash deposits on the upper body provides an appealing decoration.
