When your hair is super-fried from being bleached and dyed, it won’t hold color well. Hollow hair shafts will absorb the brownish-gray from an ash blond color more strongly, then it will wash out and the more recognizable “blonde” will be there for a bit. I suspect that’s what is happening here.

This is strategic, in the same vein as the constant refrain of “Is Claude conscious?” By insinuating that using certain language with an LLM constitutes “abuse,” Anthropic moves Claude closer to a human-like arena, with rights, and constrains the rights of the actual human user.

Plus, I think Vance knows that if he gave anything resembling even a bad-faith description of socialism, there’s a chance someone in the audience might actually find it intriguing.

I was fortunate to see Suzy Izzard’s solo Hamlet in the East Village a couple years ago. Her performance and ingenious manifestation of multiple characters were phenomenal!

(I may be being overly earnest, but I think the intense self-loathing as an automatic response can be an obstacle to survival and to maintaining healthy relationships. The hope is to make amends with the the other person, but that is on their terms, and meanwhile one does one’s best.)

If there was little allowance during one’s youth for screwing up or being less than perfect or having needs, the psyche does not know what to do with a failure like having done someone wrong. It takes a long time to learn that you are not an abjectly awful person for having failed in some way.

I think there is a chasm that opens after cognizance that the hurtful act or omission was, indeed, hurtful—for many of us this involves self-loathing that translates in the mind to “please kill me.” Accepting that one has caused pain, and nonetheless still deserves to exist, can be very difficult.

It’s also part of the tech oligarchs’ mission to devalue and dismantle higher ed in the US — the more they insist it is unnecessary (and in fact a destructive force), the more receptive sectors of the public will be to the gutting of university programs.

(From Luke O’Neil’s “We Had It Coming,” with ALT text)
The drums have to be tuned This probably applies to all of you. People in possession of human souls who have at least on occasion felt the divine in a work of art. Everything I write myself and everything I love to read or listen to or watch has one bedrock component to it which
is this: Jesus Christ I am alive right now and you are alive right now and someday we will not be but for the duration of this we are both stupidly and beautifully
alive. Please bear witness to my humanity and take some small portion of it for yourself. Return the favor to
someone else later when you can.

This passage, from Luke O’Neil’s amazing book “We Had It Coming,” took my breath away with its immediacy and humanity, the palpable mission of connecting the artist to the reader. I had to capture it then and there (it would have been better to write it down, but I was not in a place to do so):

This has been a major concern of mine ever since LLM bots were introduced and Congress voted for no “Ai” regulation. The constant media refrains of ”Can ‘Ai’ think?” and “Is ‘Ai’ conscious?” are intentionally positioned to enable an argument for “Ai” “rights.”

This is an excellently written, heartbreaking article about horrendous OSHA violations and inhumane treatment of farm workers. I am aghast that the company has been fined only $42,000 and $7,000, respectively, for its noncompliance that led to workers’ brain damage and death from heatstroke.
