They still won’t give them back! The greeks are pissed about it!

A lot of Greek antiquity was literally stolen, like the Elgin Marbles. White supremacists who justified the theft said actually, brits are more rightful inheritors of Greek culture than the people living there (with heinous racial justifications)

(And schools that don’t hold kids to high expectations and let them come out the same as they came in fail at that critical aspect of education)

Education helps to support the cultivation of that personal self discipline. If your teachers don’t let you stop at the easiest answer and make you elaborate your thinking over and over, you’re more likely to do that in your adult life, where there is nobody demanding that of you.

So support public education! Make it better so kids don’t fall through the cracks!

Anyways what we really need is an educated public. They need to know basic concepts of the scientific and historical methods, understand scale, incorporate new information into their worldviews, and support claims with evidence (and recognize when they’re not supported)

If you emphasize too much about being careful what you believe they will still be lost because they won’t be equipped to figure out what to believe. I think a part of the problem is approaching people like they’re naturally gullible rather than naturally skeptical and inclined to claim-testing.

I’ve changed a lot of how I teach about primary/secondary sources and source analysis because of this. Students are lost in an epistemological whirlwind and they tend to stop believing anything is definitely true if taught about bias/reliability w/o a concept of how experts construct knowledge

(Sub was fired in the middle of the class for this so everyone was buzzing, the story would have a very different valence if the school didn’t clearly signal that this was an unacceptable way to talk to kids)

Their regular teacher is probably gonna love it too. I had a student who gave me a lot of trouble last year and one day i was out and the sub crashed out at him and cursed him out and the next day he was like “i’ve never been more happy to see you in my life”

OK this is legitimately very funny. Elaborate performance art. The kids involved are gonna be riding high off of sharing this story for years.

I am genuinely always happy these days to see a friend posting about their colonoscopy prep because the number of people I know who've been told to come back in less than ten years bc of polyps found and removed is extremely high.

this story is extremely (and unnecessarily) graphic, so please take care of yourselves as I see this making the rounds.

See i think when that happens people have the good sense to keep a delicate relationship where trust is being rebuilt private

There is also daily fantasy sports which was the gateway drug for sports betting legalization, and lots of people in the AI space seem to have gambling addictions, so i’m making an inference here

This should be so obvious that it doesn’t need to be said, but given what kind of weekend it’s been on here, apparently it does: If you don’t want old rapists running the world, in office, in the board room, making decisions for all of us get comfortable with “ruining” young rapists’ lives

Let the creativity flow with cardboard boxes this weekend and the baby loves it :)
A black cat with green eyes in a cardboard box decorated and cut to look like a house, with a pumpkin drawn on with sharpie to resemble a cat-faced jack-o-lantern and a mailbox with the name “Kiki” on it. She is looking up and to the right.

If you're in these 3 states, *TODAY* is deadline to register to vote. Alaska Rhode Island South Carolina Even if you think you've registered: doesn't hurt to check everything is in order. Do it now. And there's a lot to vote for across them. A thread with stakes on each. ⬇️

I checked the jacob geller subreddit yesterday and they were in shock. Today theyve all read this article and given themselves a permission structure to keep supporting him and complain about his cancellation

Also with a photo of a girl who doesn’t even attend BPS, because the people who send their kids to BPS don’t pull this shit.

I really do love jet lag. I was a nebula subscriber before i started watching it and what got me to check it out was actually one of my 7th grade boys asking if i’d seen it and saying I’d like it. He’s a kind and curious kid and i’m glad there are male youtubers who can be role models for him.

I’m glad nebula cut ties with Jacob Geller so swiftly. My husband and I have been loving our jet lag wednesdays and i don’t think i could have stood to watch those anymore if i thought the guys in the show were on the fence about the seriousness of rape

My dad was sexually assaulted by a man (who did this a lot and was untouchable because he was the kid of a diplomat) at a college party when he and my mom were passed out once. Every time my mom saw the perpetrator after that at a party she loudly called him a rapist and chased him out.

Why would a member of a sorority go into a frat house, the center of much of their social activity? Boggles the mind.

Bonus with thermoluminescence is that it can be dated up to 500,000 years from now-- increasing your potential historical footprint

Sorry, I gotta be pedantic about this because I just taught it to my students today-- carbon dating only works for organic materials. So if there are residues, that might work-- but otherwise bury it in the ground and hope someone uses thermoluminescence dating on it

Most of the ones I got wrong were specific brain vocabulary rather than the conceptual understanding of how memory works, so I’m pleased at least that I haven’t been misleading my students when I teach them about studying!

Put another way, to be legible enough for AI to be useful to most families, they would have to stop communicating as the family they have known, never had to overtly think about, and become something stranger and coarser that has no cultural foundation. Why would I do that?

I really have tried and tried to think of a good use case. Every one of them is cutting corners or risking sacrificing something that feels unacceptable to sacrifice.

The funny thing is that the precondition for making AI agents— identifying and itemizing tasks— can be legitimately helpful for building time management and executive function. But once you’ve mastered that AI is never gonna be better at it than you. So why make an agent.

I have kids using notebooks every day in class and i start to see them turning to them as places to get their thinking down, doodle, personalize in a way that chromebooks never could

My district ended one to one chromebooks for grades 7-9 this year. Since i started my career during COVID this is a new experience for me. My students have been heatedly debating which color folder/binder goes with what subject and it just makes me happy.

So this stuff that should be common knowledge at this point— betting companies are not exactly operating discreetly!— is not actually understood well by most people, not widely discussed, not helping people at risk because of an abdication of social ethics by corporate newsrooms

There’s not really a major sports media platform in this attention and advertising economy that isn’t complicit in pushing sports betting, getting engagement from sports betting, being sponsored by betting companies, reframing their coverage around betting…

DraftKings predatory VIP program that encourages problem gambling has been reported on already, by people interviewing problem gamblers— Danny Funt writes about it in “Everybody Loses”. Problem is the reporting doesn’t break thru on mainstream sports platforms, which are making money from gambling.

I happen to know someone who works in election oversight and the trump administration is literally just using the legal system (and extralegal goons) to harass state election officials and threaten them with prosecution. One should assume it’s all lies in a desperate bid to keep power.

That thesis is also supported by the lesbian bar story where the owner is saddled with 50k in debt after the two friends who had the idea and drive to open it stopped taking on the upkeep and went to clown college
