We had a brilliant time at Lancaster University's public engagement festival, Campus in the City, yesterday! We engaged with 260 people in Morecambe with ultrasound, nasalance, accent quizzes, gender and language, and a grammar escape room! @lancslinguistics.bsky.social @phoneticslab.bsky.social
A group of 10 colleagues in a room. Most of us are wearing red Lancaster Phonetics Lab t-shirts. I am holding an ultrasound probe and Sam Kirkham is holding a nasalance device.

It was my great privilege to give a talk yesterday at Jagiellonian University in Kraków, hosted by the Language Documentation Centre, Department of General and Indo-European Linguistics. @lancslinguistics.bsky.social @phoneticslab.bsky.social
A selfie of me standing in front of the Jagiellonian University banner. The banner shows a modern university building where I gave my talk. The banner has a blue background showing the university logo. The weather is cold at the moment so I am wearing a black winter coat, purple scarf, and a grey hat.

A view of the River Lune in Lancaster on a very still day in winter. The blue sky is reflected in the river water. There is an architecturally unusual footbridge over the river called the Millennium Bridge. It has two vertical posts with suspension wires attached. Some houses and buildings are visible in the background.

We are delighted to welcome Dr Anton Malmi, who has started a 3-year postdoc in @phoneticslab.bsky.social @lancslinguistics.bsky.social funded by the Estonian Research Council! Anton will be investigating the acquisition of palatalisation in Estonian children using ultrasound tongue imaging.

We present an approach to collecting articulatory and acoustic data in public spaces combined with public engagement. We also assess noisiness of acoustic data. Acoustic data collected at a market stall are noisier than lab data. But 96% of our market data were adequate for acoustic analysis.
A graph comparing signal to noise ratio results from data collected in fiver different locations: UCL recording room, UCL sound booth, Lancaster sound booth, Blackburn Market, and Burnley Market. The average values for the market locations are lower than the university settings. Two people in blue t-shirts are at opposite ends of a table recording ultrasound with two members of the public.

We've been hosting Simona Montanari, California State University, @phoneticslab.bsky.social @lancslinguistics.bsky.social for the past couple of days. Great to hear about Simona's research on Spanish-English bilingual pre-schoolers and celebrate at our lab Christmas party!

Happy #LancashireDay! In an eventful hour, I teamed up with a passing electrician to herd and wrestle the sheep back into a field. Then saw a kingfisher fishing in the river as the sun set.

Congratulations to Lancaster Phonetics Lab student Takayuki Nagamine who passed his PhD viva with no corrections yesterday! Sam Kirkham and I supervised Takayuki's research. Thanks to examiners Alexei Kochetov and Danielle Turton, and Chair @justinjhlo.bsky.social. Photo from the after party 🥳

Very happy to be rediscovering my network and meeting new people here! Please enjoy Lancaster University campus ducks from earlier this week.
A handsome male mallard duck is standing on some paving slabs looking at the camera. The sun is shining so his feathers are gleaming.

Some days I complain about my job, but some days I get to meet inspiring teachers doing incredible things for Gaelic with lovely children in a beautiful place. Today was a good day!
A beach scene in sunshine. The tide is low so some sand is visible with a calm river on the left of the picture. Low mountains are in the background. The sky is blue and almost cloudless.

Had a fun time wearing giant headphones to record this for BBC Radio 3 Free Thinking with @robdrummond.bsky.social Andrea Smith, Shane O'Mara and John Gallagher. Great to chat about accents and ultrasound www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...

A brilliant evening with Phonetics Lab colleagues at Light Up Lancaster, a light festival in our city. Public engagement is wonderful but also so completely exhausting 😅

My first time being covered in the Mail, but it could have been worse. Happy to identify as a 'mouth scanning scientist' 😅
Screenshot of a headline from the Mail Online. Headline reads 'why do people from Blackburn and Burnley sound so different?scientists will scan people's mouths to understand why the accents are so dissimilar - despite being just 10 miles apart'.

I got project stickers printed and it's possibly the best professional decision I've ever made ever. (Design by Emily Gorman).
This photo shows a pile of stickers. There are about 12 visible. The stickers are round and yellow with a purple pop art lips and tongue sticking out showing a red Lancashire rose. The lips have the words 'Lancashire tongues' written on them. Artwork is by Emily Gorman.

New on here but happy to (re)connect with everyone! Enjoy this amazing and massive tongue our PhD student Emily Gorman is painting as a commission for a light festival in Lancaster.
An anatomical painting of a tongue in midsagittal view. The different muscles are painted with UV sensitive paint which glows in the dark. Artist: Emily Gorman.
