We have a saying around the house: "Creativity is born from constraints." There is probably a more quippy way to say that, but I firmly believe "unfettered creativity" is an oxymoron.

Cat is 100% right about this. Obstacles, strife, friction -- these are REQUIRED ingredients for being human. Our capacity to feel good tracks with our capacity to feel bad, because really it's the capacity to FEEL. If AI makes everything convenient, humanity devolves to isolated socialslop.

For this group, the options are: 1) Cede the future of humanity to Communist China 2) Maintain our development advantage A) Accidentally kill everyone (terminator scenario) B) Blissful abundance (Star Trek scenario, minus spaceships) FWIW, I agree that these are the outcomes we face.

Casey Rosenthal @clr.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
The concurrent belief with "terminator scenario" is that if we slow down development, then China will develop the capability first, and use that advantage to dismantle our systems and trap us in perpetual authoritarian communism.

Look what attracted tech bros to this work in the first place: here's a tool (software) that gives you complete, deterministic control over everything it touches. And if you are in the right place at the right time, your software can reach, affect, and control more people than you will ever meet.

After he wrote ELIZA, Joseph Weizenbaum was so disappointed by the interactions he saw between humans and his little program that he wrote a book "Computer Power and Human Reason" eviscerating all low-friction engineering, software being the prime example.

On the subject of AI. People don't realize how important what @courtneynash.bsky.social is writing about here is to the whole scene: resilienceinsoftware.org/news/11560646 If you believe this take [and I do] it completely changes how you think about integrating and applying AI to engineering work.

"The older I get, the less I care what other people think." Is it weird that I experience the opposite? The older I get, the more I care what other people think. If I could, I would anchor my time around learning about other people, their experiences, what they think.

The fact that @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social‘s administration closed the $12B budget gap in its first 4.5 months should be hung on a banner in Times Square for the remainder of his tenure. All the hand-wringing about democratic socialism destroying the city seems to have been for naught

When we took office, NYC had a $12B deficit. Today it’s zero. And we didn’t close that gap on the backs of working people. We closed it while funding parks, libraries, safer streets, & public housing. Call it Pothole Politics or Democratic Socialism: We are government that delivers for the people.

Little-known fact: 16,750 years ago, cracks in the bottom of the retreating glaciers funneled small rocks into straight lines all over New England. Many ancient people used these rows of rocks as property lines.

It is not a stretch at this point to say that, if you are using a Ring doorbell, you are an ICE collaborator. Amazon readily provides data to LEOs and ICE. Don't want to be an ICE collaborator? Then don't use Ring.
