I love all your drawings but this loose, gestural piece is truly wonderful.

So I listened to the second episode today and while there wasn’t a discussion of pseudoarchaeology, @iwriteok.bsky.social emphasised the importance of context, careful work and how thoroughly Schliemann fucked Troy’s stratigraphy.

Behind the Bastards is covering "archaeologist" Heinrich Schliemann this week and it's pretty fun. In the second episode I sort of hope he'll link it to the modern pseudoarchaeology put forth on Joe Rogan's show, but we'll see. 🏺 podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/p...

We had some American relations in town last weekend and the thing that reliably shocks them the most is how much my pay-as-you-go cellphone bill is each month: £10. Unlimited minutes, texts, 10GB of data. And it works in Europe. I could get 75GB for a bit more, but I don't really need it.

I was talking to an eminent prehistorian and while they'd known that hawthorn wood was used extensively during the British Neolithic, they'd never considered that this meant that each spring past people would have been surrounded by great gobs of white flowers that smell of honey and carrion.

I like to think that worldbuilding approaches lean into the investigation of the mundane, and that the detail they lend makes its own beauty.

Colleen Morgan @clmorgan.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
We find this relatively often when trying to use historical sources to illuminate archaeological data. We study the accumulation of the mundane but we can also fall prey to privileging the extraordinary; we focus on rupture and change.

I heard it mentioned on the radio that Borges said that there's no camels in the Qur'an; this is a misreading of Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. There are actually mentions of camels, of course, but the point that Borges was trying to make was that we often omit the familiar.

Not going to go into too much detail, but I enjoyed it, having visited the haunted landscapes of Ireland & a family blown apart by distance, migration and poverty. And there’s a bit of magic and a couple of Very Good Dogs.

Just finished Maggie O’Farrell’s Land, which was my summer read so I guess it’s time for autumn now. I picked it up at an airport without any spoilers or expectations, just that I’d read Hamnet and enjoyed it. It’s gently archaeological, with maps and colonialism and placemaking.

It brings together a lot of things I love: Arabian archaeology, digital creativity, and working with local partners and development-led archaeology. The students are smart and keen and bring a lot of skills as well. Anyway, happy Friday!

We will be using the very cool archaeological landscape of Mu’tarid to build digital interpretations. The module will run concurrently with this second season of excavations which should be very cool. Hoping to set up live-streaming 360 video to our new immersive room from the site.

Throwback to when I got so annoyed at the destruction of a shed (and of misuse of my friends) I co-authored a whole article about the contemporary archaeology of dig houses: doi.org/10.1558/jca....
A decrepit shed next to two more recently built structures and a firepit. The vegetation is brown and there are big agricultural fields behind the structure. It's the notorious "chicken shed," a building that was torn down at Catalhoyuk.

I have a new article out today in the Journal for the Study of Radicalism called "Building the American Anarchist Movement: Radical Collectives and Continental Convergences in the 1980s." 1/ Access it for free with my author link: scholarlypublishingcollective.org/msup/jsr/art...
Screenshot of the beginning of an article called "Building the American Anarchist Movement: Radical Collectives and Continental Convergences in the 1980s" by Spencer Beswick. Text reads:

“Bowl a strike, not a spare—Revolution everywhere!” Members of the Revolutionary Anarchist Bowling League (RABL) chanted bowling-themed slogans as they marched against President Ronald Reagan's threat to invade Nicaragua in 1988. Acting within a broad progressive coalition, RABL helped shut down major sections of downtown Minneapolis for three days in an outpouring of rebellion against the Reagan administration's covert wars in Central America. Events reached a dramatic climax when a masked protester threw a bowling ball through the window of a military recruitment office.1 The crash of the broken glass marked the beginning of a new era of anarchist militancy in the United States. The rage of a generation of young people raised in Reagan's America threatened to explode.

Reflecting this mood, the pilot edition of what became the Love and Rage anarchist newspaper (published from 1990 to 1998) was simply called RAGE! The pilot, which was distributed at an action at the Pentagon in 1988, reflected growing anger at the Reagan administration's wars at home and abroad, including the war on drugs. Promised a “new morning in America,” a generation of disaffected young people raised in the alienation
