Some of the smug both-sidesism on this platform honestly makes me miss the other place.

Zionism, as experienced by Palestinians, not to mention all the people around the world surveilled and murdered by tech provided by the Israeli State, is much closer to Taliban ideology than you seem to realise. And unlike jihad, it is not an old idea violently coopted.

P.s. Holding people to account for their active participation in harmful institutions is what an abolitionist and BDS-compliant position demands. Maybe not everyone holds these positions, but if not then I don't really see how you can describe yourself as an anti-racist.

And finally, to be very clear, I think electoral politics is mainly a disappointment. I don't care whether this is a Green own-goal or not. What I do care about is trying to have a consistent pro-Palestine position, and the state of what passes for "the discourse" about Palestine and antisemitism.

And if the motion means that ppl who id as anti-racist are held accountable, then good, but I don't even think the motion does that. All this pearl clutching about whether Jews in the Green Party will be able to go to shul or not is a total mis-direction.

Attending synagogues where at best the 1948 Nakba is taken as a given (and it's normally a lot worse) OR standing by your principles and leaving. Imagine the furore there would be if Mothin Ali had a Taliban-supporting Imam. And if he did, then I'd expect him to answer questions about it.

Clive Gabay @clivesg.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Not that this amendment was responding to anything in the actual motion, but this is what is being missed by nearly everyone. Most UK synagogues have real, material and financial relationships to the Israeli State. If you are pro-Palestine, then you need to decide what's more important...

As far as I understand it the answer to this is no. Green Party motions come in a series of categories, one of which is disciplinary. The Anti-Zionism motion was not a disciplinary motion and therefore cannot be used in this way. Again, this is only as far as I understand it.

I must have forgotten my own family history. But that's not my question. You clearly want to lock Jews in a Holocaust-coloured picture frame. We don't get to have other histories, other choices, other lives. Thanks so much.

If we want to talk about Jewish self-determination, then we need to talk about the more than 50% of the global Jewish population that self determines to not live in the Israeli ethno-state.

Clive Gabay @clivesg.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
In 1948 there were 100s of 1000s of Jewish refugees who rejected the chance to settle in Historic Palestine. So Zionism is many things, but it is *not* straightforwardly Jewish self-determination.

Clive Gabay @clivesg.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
To suggest that Zionism equates with Jewish self-determination is actually what might be considered antisemitic. It flattens diverse Jewish lived and historical experiences and suggests that Jews everywhere have some kind of dual loyalty.

At some point, as a person of conscience, you have to decide whether you can tolerate that or not. And if you can tolerate a financial and propagandistic relationship to genocide, then yes, I think that makes you worthy of being held to account.

Clive Gabay @clivesg.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
The thing is, most zionist synagogues (i.e. most synagogues) are in a material relationship with a genocidal state. Sometimes they might b3 midly critical, but they all raise money for it, they normalise it via public events, platforming ex soldiers, etc.

This is a major issue that the right so far have been winning the debate on. Academic freedom ≠ being tolerated for making shit up. In academic terms, you're not being cancelled if a university doesn't give you a job or a journal doesn't publish you because you're pushing discredited nonsense.

BBC invited Palestinian writer, researcher and analyst Muhammad Shehada on to talk about Israel’s decision to investigate the killing of Hind Rajab. Below is Muhammad’s account of what happened next. Full disclosure: I know him years and he’s a regular on the pod. So naturally I believe him 100%.
@muhammadshehad2
Disappointed the BBC cancelled my interview on
Israel's killing of Hind Rajab
2 producers eagerly reached out. They confirmed the time & one called to prepare a brief for the anchor
She asked me whether Israel's announcement is positive, I explained in detail it was a cover up.
The IDF is blaming the killing of Hind, her uncle, aunt & 4 cousins on the family itself for trying to flee by car & on the ambulance sent to rescue her for "failures in the co-ordination of the movement."
None of this is remotely true! The Red Cross immediately informed the IDF about 5-year-old Hind who was hiding in that motionless car, & they requested permission from Israel to allow an ambulance to rescue them.
After multiple long hours, Israel granted greenlight to the ambulance & provided them with a designated route on a GPS to drive on.soon as the ambulance reached Hind's car, the IDF ambushed & bombed them immediately with an American made anti-tank missile then opened fire on Hind's car. The car was hit with 355 bullets.
Israel then kept that area under lockdown for 12 days, & prevented anyone from approaching.
Hind's mom went daily to the Ahli baptist hospital hoping to find her daughter, until her lifeless body was brought in along with the charred remains of the ambulance men.
Israel then claimed after an "initial investigation" that its troops were NEVER in that area to begin with. They maintained that claim for 2 years despite ample recordings & satellite images debunking this lie.
The only reason Israel is now making this new announcement of a deeper investigation is to shield its soldiers & generals from the International Criminal Court by invoking the principle of "complementarity;" that the ICC cannot investigate a state that is already investigating itself in good faith.I told the BBC producer Israel today also quietly shut down the investigation into the triple tap killing of American, Canadian, British, Australian & Polish citizens in the WCK massacre. Israel blamed the massacre on the aid workers themselves for "deviating from the predesignated route" & for hiring an armed security guard "without informing the IDF" (both claims where debunked by WCK themselves, who had coordinates their every step with the IDF).
I told the producer the Israeli commander responsible for this massacre, Nochi Mendel, is a fanatical settler who had signed a petition calling for starving Gaza & that he was celebrated by settler leaders & supported by Israeli government leaders after what he did.
Mendel even received a box of chocolate from the settler council's leader & a letter of support for what he did.
Mendel was initially dismissed by the IDF & blamed for the massacre, but was quickly & quietly reinstated & promoted in the Defence Ministry as the head of the settlements and notionol infroctrunturo unitIt's abundantly clear Israel is NOT serious about prosecuting any of the atrocities committed in Gaza. Since the genocide began, only two soldiers were punished by the IDF; one for microwaving a living frog & another for cooking sausages in the army kitchen on Shabbat.
The producer asked me: What about the 150 cases the IDF said are pending review?
I answered: it's just a number designed to give the appearance of seriousness, but it's essentially meaningless.
If it took the IDF two whole years to admit the simplest of facts that the entire world had already known, which is that their troops were the ones who fired on Hind Rajab's car, how do you expect them to do with the remaining cases that are not as high profile?
Five minutes after the call, the producer wrote me that they decided to cancel the interview & will not even host anyone else to comment on the issue, & instead they'll play archival footage!

RIP Jason Arday. I never met you, never knew you and what I read of your work I found unimpressive. And yet I feel a sadness and loss at your death. You never deserved for it to end this way. You were used and even abused by others for their own ends. I do not believe you were in any way a bad person. Indeed there are many reasons to believe you were a good person. You needed help. Yet when you needed help it never came. Despite the huge pile on, nobody seemed to be there for you. You were left to die on your own, which only adds to the sadness. RIP Jason Arday. You were failed by those who had a duty of care towards you.David Aaronovitch ®
