Going to reiterate how important context is in these situations though. I would recommend ensuring that your full frustration is communicated to ensure that we can see where the actual problem is, and work to correct it in the future. (4/4)

I don't think anyone (including me) would fault you for leaving things in the free room if you couldn't physically access them before you leave. It'd be entirely unreasonable to expect you to accommodate the delay in reopening, and it puts the responsibility on us to take care of it. (3/4)

Your reasoning is perfectly rational and acceptable in light of the context you provided, but in the absence of that context, the manner in which you presented your message was easily interpreted as hostile and entitled. (2/4)

That's understandable - to provide context, there was filming of the event in the Hahn Auditorium going on, and the event that was being filmed started late and ran past time. I apologize for the delay in access, and we got the room open as soon as we could (1/4)

We all have things that we aren't interested in any more, and the free table is an opportunity for the community to pass those things on to someone who values them. If it's ewaste, then recycle it yourself. If it's not, then try again next time. Either way, take it away with you. (3/3)

People leave behind destroyed PCBs, bent VCRs, drives with heads torn out, hard drives with magnets harvested, TVs with broken screens, damaged heavy steel cabinets, and literal trash. (2/3)

The free table is not a dumping ground for ewaste. I'm the person who has to deal with moving and trucking the leftovers to an e-waste facility after VCF West, and It's always upsetting to see the amount of literal e-waste that nobody would ever want left behind. (1/3)

Enough to entice people who were fence sitters waiting for a sale to buy the product. This is especially common in products where the initial purchase leads to additional revenue (digital goods, etc.) since less profit on the initial purchase is a small cost compared to boosting the userbase.

When it comes to generic SIXLTR brands, and consumer goods where the MSRP is not really publicized much, you're likely to get a bad deal. For more iconic goods (specific cellphone models, game consoles, etc.) where the MSRP is known, there are still thankfully some minor deals to be had.

Clinton @clintonoddfellow.bsky.social · 10/12/2025
But, because it became a cultural phenomenon, consumers are trained to wait to spend on something because they expect a deal. The illusion is kept up, and people go nuts.

Clinton @clintonoddfellow.bsky.social · 10/12/2025
In the early days, Black Friday still had deals to be had, since it was inventory clearing. Nowadays, with enormous amounts of data on consumer habits enabling forecasting, combined with Just In Time manufacturing and logistics means there's almost never excess inventory.

Overall, this is a topic I'd love to discuss more, and hear contrasting viewpoints on. Once again, I've got no love for Waymo in particular, I just believe that improvements in ASD will make the roads safer, and the statistics I've seen seem to bear this out.

The sources I linked in my previous posts are also from personal injury law firms, who are the ones you'd hire in the event that you were pursuing litigation in the event of an incident involving a self-driving car. I would expect their bias would be to find the ASD vehicle at fault. (Continued)

If you could manage to get braked checked at that speed, you're not paying attention, following too closely, or both. Once again, this is based on my own experience with driving, and I'd love to hear other viewpoints. (Continued)

Regardless of whether a human or computer was driving either car, I can't think of a situation (and please help me if I'm just not thinking of one) where the car in the rear would not be at fault for striking a stationary vehicle in a 25mph zone. (Continued)

Clinton @clintonoddfellow.bsky.social · 15/11/2025
Additionally, in many of these cases, assessing fault isn't particularly difficult, and there aren't a whole lot of options. The majority of reported crashes happened in a 25mph speed limit zone, a good number of them involved someone hitting a stationary Waymo, mainly in the rear. (Continued)

I don't quite understand what you're saying, or why I'd be disqualified from talking about any particular subject. I'm not any supporter of Waymo in particular, or an apologist, just someone who believes that this is a new technology that as it matures will save lives. (Continued)

Clinton @clintonoddfellow.bsky.social · 14/11/2025
Improvement in technology is undoubtedly necessary to avoid edge case failures like the one you linked, but in order to improve, we have to find those edge cases, and the only way to do that is by moving into what is effectively an open beta. I hope for other players to step up and compete.

The indisputable facts about humans is that we're subject to fatigue, emotions, and judgement imparing substances. We also break rules when it's convenient. Computers are endlessly patient, unemotional, and always alert, follow the rules, and can't drive drunk. (Continued)

What I've linked here are examples, and certainly not the extent of the data I've perused. I am aware that bias is real and that what anyone reads can be garbage, so I encourage folks to do their own noodling around on this subject as well. (Continued)

But in the case of things like the incident you cited, the systems have erred on the side of caution. I'd love to have more controlled testing, but there's a point at which technology like this needs to improve in real world conditions. You don't find all edge cases in test. (Continued)

I'm a skeptic, and I'm certainly not a shill for any particular company. I have no reason to defend Waymo themselves, but I believe that ADS systems are safer where it counts. Failures and oddities like you cited are problematic, and are certainly a need for improvement (Continued)

The theme for PAWcon this year was pirates. ... So anyways, it turns out that you can just, like, buy a little dinghy from facebook marketplace, slap some paint on it, and put it on the party floor at the con. I now understand what people mean when they say that the intrusive thoughts won, ahah
A rowboat on the party floor at PAWcon, with a mast and sail made of string lights. Inside the boat is a stack of buzzballs painted black like cannon balls, and two CRT TVs looping anti-media-piracy videos. An inflatable palm tree is next to the boat, as are two coolers that have been painted to look like treasure chestsView of the boat on the party floor from above, showing the inflatable palm trees, oars, and string lightsA rowboat sitting on the empty party floor at PAWcon, with some PVC pipes next to itA freshly-painted yellow rowboat in the bed of a pickup truck, with oars and two coolers (that have been painted with cartoony wood grain to look like treasure chests) nearby.

This is a perfect tragic storm. A cat who is a local celebrity gets run over by a robot car. Instant ragebait to generate clicks and drive ad revenue.

Clinton @clintonoddfellow.bsky.social · 14/11/2025
For sure this was an accident. The computers driving Waymo cars lack one of the greatest failings of human drivers -- Emotions. I have seen human drivers on multiple occasions alter their course to deliberately run over an animal in the street they could have otherwise easily avoided.
100
Clinton @clintonoddfellow.bsky.social · 14/11/2025
Between pride in driving skill, and an entrenched bias toward humanity, society is biased to take any story about self-driving cars having a problem and absolutely eat it up to "prove" that they were a mistake.
100
Clinton @clintonoddfellow.bsky.social · 14/11/2025
I'm not shilling for Waymo in particular, but driverless cars have demonstrated a MUCH lower "problem per passenger mile" statistic than cars with human drivers. They're still emerging tech at the moment, but I'm eager to see where they go. They will bring many advantages with time.
200
Clinton @clintonoddfellow.bsky.social · 14/11/2025
These kind of stories are tragic, but remember, if a human driver had run over and killed the cat, you never would've heard about it. Driverless cars are "new and scary" so the news cycle is going to over report every single problem they see with them, since it'll generate clicks and ad revenue.

This is such incredible news. I'm sad it's so under-reported. I remember in the 90s when I was in school, the cure for AIDS was on everyone's lips, and then it faded out of the public interest. All of the developments in management and prevention aren't exciting enough to make the front page now
