Why aviation’s climate impact flies above its emissions, and how we could bring it down. www.climatetrunk.com/infographics... Flying produces ~2.5% of global CO2 emissions, but closer to ~4% of heating. Visual 23 of 100+ 🌳 ✈️ @climatetrunk.bsky.social H/t @milank.bsky.social and others.
Aviation punches above the weight of its CO2 emissions.
Flying accounts for around 2.5% of global CO2 emissions, but closer to 4% of global heating once other effects are included. As other sectors of the economy decarbonise, aviation’s relative share of heating will rise.

One of the inspirations behind Climate Trunk – and the OG of explaining #climatescience and dispelling myths – are now mirroring Trunk releases, visual for visual. Thanks @skepticalscience.bsky.social Science: skepticalscience.com/climate-trun... @baerbelw.bsky.social @climatetrunk.bsky.social 🌳

Last week I asked if an historical version of @climatetrunk.bsky.social’s breakdown of annual emissions would be useful. The answer was an emphatic yes. Some familiar names loom much larger. @skepticalscience.bsky.social @visualisingclimate.com www.climatetrunk.com/infographics...
Just 35 companies can be linked to 40% of global CO2 emissions since 1854. CO2 emissions accumulate in the atmosphere over time. Today’s heating reflects the stock that has built up over generations – about 1.2 trillion tonnes.

Half of annual CO2 emissions can be traced to just 32 firms. Saudi Aramco is linked to 4% of the total, while China’s red giants dominate the picture. Squint and you'll spot the investor-owned firms we all know: Exxon, BP, Shell etc H/t @influencemap.bsky.social @climatetrunk.bsky.social 🌳
Just 32 companies were linked to more than half of global fossil-fuel and cement CO2 emissions in 2024. Emissions may be highly concentrated, but getting to net zero is a shared responsibility – fossil fuel producers are ultimately influenced by governments, companies, investors and individuals.

Only 8 nations voted against the UN General Assembly backing the #ICJ’s landmark climate ruling. Combined, they account for one-third of historical CO2 emissions. The US (#1) + Russia (#3) make up the vast bulk, with generous support from Iran and Saudi Arabia. @daisydunne.carbonbrief.org
The UN General Assembly backed the ICJ’s landmark climate ruling by 141 votes to 8. The eight voting against, including the US and Russia, account for one-third of cumulative historical CO2 emissions since 1750.

No country is too small to matter. Nations that each emit around 1% of global CO2 may look negligible on their own, but together they produce about 30% of the total – roughly as much as China. If they sit it out, the maths doesn’t stack up.

Net zero is not a political slogan, it’s the physics of how we stop heating. Turn down the emissions tap as far as possible, then remove what’s left – bringing inflows and outflows into balance so temperatures stabilise.

Honoured to have @skepticalscience.bsky.social host the first @climatetrunk.bsky.social insight on the #ReallyBigPicture. skepticalscience.com/climatetrunk... Thanks for the nudge, @kenrice.bsky.social @baerbelw.bsky.social

Climate change is bad news for societies built on stability. But the future is not pre-written. Within a single lifetime, the extent of heating – and the risks that come with it – depends on the choices societies make over the next decade or so.

Human activity is driving today’s heating. Greenhouse gases create strong warming, partly offset by cooling from air pollution. Natural factors play a minimal role in the long-term trend.

Global temperatures are rising fast. The long-term trend is unequivocal: Earth has heated by around 1.3°C since the late 19th century — with most of that increase coming recently.

Climate and energy are hard to get your head around, unless you're in the climate Bluesky community. Over the last year, I’ve been building something to help everyone else: @climatetrunk.bsky.social 🌳 One visual a week, for a year. Probably two years now, given I've already drafted more than 52.
