Let’s not add ‘make Jeff Bezos richer while helping kill innocent people faster’ to that list. It’s time we pressed pause on AI until we can get the rules in place that make it work for people, not just for billionaires.

For the rest of us, AI is a technology that steals our water, pollutes our air, drives up our energy bills and warps our politics in horrible ways. All while trying to take away our jobs (or at least convince our bosses it can do our jobs, so they should pay us less).

Keith Stewart @climatekeith.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
That distrust has been earned. To quote @doctorow.pluralistic.net: the most important fact about any technology isn’t what it does. It’s who it does it for & who it does it to. AI, in its current form, works brilliantly for tech billionaires like Bezos or Musk & their political allies like Trump.

In place of actual regulation, we get a non-binding/unenforceable “framework” for AI data centres and a multi-million dollar program to “educate” Canadians on why they are wrong to distrust AI.

AI got the blame for the Iran school bombing. The truth is far more worrying
LLMs-gone-rogue dominated coverage, but had nothing to do with the targeting. Instead, it was choices made by human beings, over many years, that gave us this atrocity
